Dat betekent dat indien de hele wereld zou leven, produceren en consumeren zoals mensen en bedrijven hier, alle grondstoffen die de planeet in 1 jaar kan aanleveren nu al zouden zijn uitgeput. Dat is niet alleen slecht voor het milieu, maar volgens de bedenker van de ecologische voetafdruk is het ook een risico voor de economie. "Zelf niet in je grondstoffen kunnen voorzien, is een gevaar. België staat daar nogal bloot aan."

We leven nog altijd op te grote voet in #België. Na 101 dagen hebben we alle eigen grondstoffen opgebruikt. Voor de volgende 264 dagen moet alles ingevoerd worden. Er moeten ecologisch nog grote stappen gezet worden.
