Amidst Trump’s hyperbolic and overbearing threats of annexation, Canada’s new Prime Minister’s number one task is to assert its sovereignty. Sovereignty, now usually meaning “existence as an independent state”, came into English in the 14th c. with the sense “pre-eminence, excellence, superiority; authority, rule, supremacy of power or rank” from Anglo-Norman sovereynete and Old French souverainete, from soverain “highest, supreme, chief”, from Vulgar Latin *superanus “chief, principal”, ultimately from Latin super “above, over”, which is traceable back to *(s)uper, a variant form of the Proto-Indo-European root *uper “over”. This root also came into Greek as huper “over, beyond”, which when combined with bole “a throw” (from the verb ballein “to throw”) produced huperbole “exaggeration, extravagance” and the adjective huperbolikos “extravagant”, which were borrowed through Latin into English as hyperbole and hyperbolic. The root *uper in its extended form *uperi also made it into the Germanic branch as Proto-Germanic *uberi, which came into Old English as ofer “over” (giving us Modern English over), which in Old English was used as a prefix often with negative overtones, which we can also see in the later English compound word overbearing.
