The somewhat astonishing Alcon 12 Pot calipers fitted to the #PC27 In fact these produce a bit of drag when hot and were one of the issues the car had in 1998. But they are quite beautiful!
#PC27
Some minor #PC27 news - new headrest (was missing and now redesigned to acomodate a HANS device) is just about done. Still fighting electronics and flywheel trigger pickups so it's encoraging to make a little progress elsewhere!
One of the standout features of the #PC27 is the plenum chamber as a structural part of the car. Deleted for 1999, the rear left mount was ground to make space for the crank trigger wire. We had a new mount EB welded in place and the rib built up with TIG. I very nervously dressed it back...
Given things have stalled a bit with the #PC27, thought I would post some photos of the engine build previously posted on the 'other place'. Starting with 108D of '97 next to 108E of '98. The E is a hell of a lot more compact to it's detriment. Also centre V pumps and crank.
So... a degree of success after an awful lot of messing about. Crank trigger looks good on the scope, triggers spaced as expected but RPM in the HUD looked unstable then disappeared for no apparent reason towards the end of the day. I did manage to log some data. Some head scratching to do #PC27
Mockup headrest for the #PC27 the actual item will be made in Kevlar. Fits will, some very minor adjustments on trim lines required but overall a very good start.
The offending 10 tooth flywheel. Still formulating plan B but making progress. Note the curvic coupling that mates to the crank via an intermediate crank gear (i.e. crank / gear / flywheel all with curivc's). The expense of reproducing that detail is a bit scary... #PC27
I think we've realistically done everything we can prior to a #PC27 fire up attempt mid next week. Will wait until Monday to add methanol, then start cranking for triggers, fuel and oil pressure etc. Nice to see it on umbilicals ready to go... hopefully!
Engine and gearbox oil in, so far no leaks. Heated water system to 70C on the heater rig, again no issues. Finger crossed the same is true tomorrow morning! Voltage fluctuations have 'magically' gone away which is concerning, it seems to be wheel speed sensor related so will keep an eye out. #PC27
LH chassis loom now final fitted. Coolant, engine and GBX oil temps look right for the ambient today. Coolant and GBX oil pressure both read zero, which is encouraging. The PI 5 Star is pulling the voltage about so need to look into that... #PC27
Had a new toe link heatshield made, I suspect only one side was run, but it offends my sense of symmetry. Seeing the unused mounting lug was bothering me #PC27
IC108E plenum is one piece and hard mounted to form a stiff spine to the #PC27 Throttle and trumpet mechanism is achingly beautiful and loaded from the rear of the plenum. Trumpets were anodised different colours for road course, short oval and super speedway lengths.
LH exhaust now fitted. A particularly difficult job for Mark Pemble and Ady Matthews to produce but they have done an outstanding job. Another step closer to fire-up. #PC27
New ECU enclosure arrived today - the second box housing made from in-house moulds so pretty satisfying. #PC27
A few adjustments needed on the LH wastegate to tail pipe joint. It doesn't quite fit, or at least it's loaded up. Removing the short joint tube shows a bit of misalignment. Shorter wastegate manifold and longer joint tube should do the trick. #PC27
Much work ongoing to finish the #PC27 exhaust, wiring, and coms. Car now talking via Windows 98 running as a VM on a Windows 11 laptop. Have sent and read back a calibration... my brain feels like mush ATM! Am having to write lists of emails to send and other basic tasks.
New RH wastegate tail pipe and heat shielding produced by Mark Pemble and Ady Matthews arrived this morning and fits snugly. #PC27
Measuring motion ratios ATM - how much the damper compresses for every 3mm wheel travel. Measuring hydrobump stroke at the same time. The rear rate is surprisingly linear, I expected more rising rate i.e. more damper movment later in the wheel stroke. #PC27
Finally mocked up the RH wastegate pipe on the #PC27 this morning. It was drawn up by Mark Pemple (based on scan data of the car) and made by Ady Matthews, both ex-Penske Cars. Only tacked together at this stage but, wow! It's superb.
Some general shots now that we are edging closer to completion. Steering column and switch pannel went in yesterday, with some further brake ducting and a tidy up of looms and pipes today. #PC27
The green pipe is the engine oil breather line that runs from the catchtank to the floor at the front of the bell housing. The tube itself is quite hard to acquire, our friends at Atec got it in grom Germany. #PC27
Much of the myriad of small stuff for the #PC27 is now in hand so we are finally reaching what you might call 'critical mass' with a fire up attempt likley in about 3-4 weeks time. Light at end of tunnel switched back on.
Front Hydrobump parts back from anodising at Protech Finishing this afternoon. Very happy (and a little relieved) with how it's all turned out. #PC27
Building up #PC27 rear road course wing this afternoon in-between showers at the Sywell Aviation Museam opening (well worth a visit). The Marlboro is actually painted on to maintain a smooth surface finish. Pretty extreme atte tion to detail.
New wastegate bottom can 90 deg fittings arrived today, they were tricky blighters to draw. The chamfer, pictured on an original, took some figuring out and it was the machinist that set me straight in the end... good to have a competent eye cast over it. #PC27
