“The biggest difference across the countries is language. Nigeria has announced it is creating its own large language model. In Kenya we are seeing efforts to create a Swahili AI model. Our stories are not all told in English,” says @PmigwiTRD #PEPconf2024

“If I was making policy, I’d be looking at where can I use AI to increase jobs and what do I need to ensure they are good quality? And then where is it going to be most useful, for example logistics and information as ways to support development,” says @_sarahcook at #PEPconf2024

At #PEPconf2024 @megballesty comments on unequal opportunities in the tech sector: “Because of socio-cultural norms, we tend to see 2-3 men in the STEM sector for every woman. Only 4% of Global South workers are in this sector. It is 2-3 times more in the Global North.”

“Technology is changing the way work happens. As we heard earlier, it is being taskified. This is essentially a process of de-skilling and it doesn’t give people career opportunities. We need to create pathways into decent work,” says @_sarahcook at #PEPconf2024
