"Our brains process visuals 60.000 times faster" - Prakriti Kar on why social media and visual story telling is important for disseminating research. #Commstraining #Pepconf2024
“This could mean community meetings, putting on educational shows, or engaging community health workers to share your message” #PEPconf2024 (2/2)
“Your strategy depends on your audience. If they don’t have electricity or internet access, you need to think of other ways to reach people,” Director of Comms, Richa Bansal, on how to communicate research, for our researchers in the room and online, at #PEPconf2024 (1/2)
As well as providing the closing remarks on our afternoon session, Rohinton Medhora also provided the vote of thanks for the overall PEP 2024 Policy Conference. Thanks go to our panelists, speakers, moderator and organisers, and especially all our participants.

“The biggest difference across the countries is language. Nigeria has announced it is creating its own large language model. In Kenya we are seeing efforts to create a Swahili AI model. Our stories are not all told in English,” says @PmigwiTRD #PEPconf2024
“For the private sector, collaboration is key. There are some learnings that the private sector may bring, especially for global players, successes and failures would be useful. Investment may also flow faster,” says @jmatogo #PEPconf2024
“Set up places - policy labs - where you can test it: you can’t legislate what you don’t know,” says @PmigwiTRD
#PEPconf2024 in our panel discussion on making AI work for the Global South labour market
“Ensuring that platform workers have the same rights and formal workers and making jobs that are enhanced by AI more accessible to women, for example through training, for ethical AI development,” says @megballesty at #PEPconf2024
“Addressing the challenges that prevent girls from getting an education is key to addressing the gender bias in tech,” says @PmigwiTRD “Skills is one area we can invest in, upskillings and reskilling,” agrees @jmatogo #PEPconf2024
“If I was making policy, I’d be looking at where can I use AI to increase jobs and what do I need to ensure they are good quality? And then where is it going to be most useful, for example logistics and information as ways to support development,” says @_sarahcook at #PEPconf2024
At #PEPconf2024 @megballesty comments on unequal opportunities in the tech sector: “Because of socio-cultural norms, we tend to see 2-3 men in the STEM sector for every woman. Only 4% of Global South workers are in this sector. It is 2-3 times more in the Global North.”
“Technology is changing the way work happens. As we heard earlier, it is being taskified. This is essentially a process of de-skilling and it doesn’t give people career opportunities. We need to create pathways into decent work,” says @_sarahcook at #PEPconf2024
“Larger, older organisations in the region may still be in the digitalisation phase but with a young population, they are ready and quick to take up AI technology” says @jmatogo at #PEPconf2024 Watch online: https://youtube.com/live/k4d5s2yTRAo?feature=share
“The Global South has a lot of opportunities in agriculture. Typically Kenya’s 40K farmers would not have access to weather data and information on when to use fertiliser. AI can create real benefits through an easily accessible tool,” says @PmigwiTRD at #PEPconf2024
“If we keep using the same parameters for everyone we’re going to keep seeing the same challenges. We have to switch our thinking on what an AI labour market looks like,” says @PmigwiTRD at #PEPconf2024 Watch online: https://youtube.com/live/k4d5s2yTRAo?feature=share
.@megballesty continues: “Building scenarios is a really helpful tool to assess which are the most likely and which are preferable in terms of social outcomes. The optimistic one is not the most likely but we can work towards it” #PEPconf2024
“We have two views, one optimistic and one pessimistic suggesting that AI will widen the inequality between the developed and developing worlds,” says @megballesty at #PEPconf2024 Watch online: https://youtube.com/live/k4d5s2yTRAo?feature=share
