piecemeal methods i stand in the winter living room. outside, bare trees. birds working the dead grass. who taught me that quiet was a kind of mercy. i take the calm in sections as if it were given, as if it were earned. fragments of numb hurt. things people call bliss. nothing whole. nothing broken. still, i wake each day facing what remains, taking up again the work of holding.

The plays continue piecemeal acts, scenes, broken parts. Actors lean toward the prompter. The chorus drones: ah, fate, fate rules our days. Performances falter, discontent begins. No curtain call. Spectators rise, murmuring, angry at themselves.

Piecemeal I kept my words in hiding for years, convinced they weren’t worth the light. Then a poetry angel wandered in, looked at my scraps, and said, “these aren’t shit.” Her kindness stayed. So I tried. I let strangers online see the vulnerable parts of me. Every heart dropped into an empty pot, filling it bit by bit. Every kind comment pouring more into the pot, filling it bit by bit. Every friend who thought my work worth sharing went in the pot, filling it bit by bit. And now my confidence, once thin as the paper I wrote on, has grown enough that I dare to think I might actually be okay at this.
