Rune is chastised by the others for their rude question, but Soul does his best to not take offense, reminding everyone that the Togepi is a child and doesn't know any better yet. However, he's concerned that Rune heard "that word" and wonders where they picked it up from. Rune reminds Soul that they're psychic, much to the researcher's chagrin. Rune wonders why Silver called Soul "that" (a freak). Soul explains that it's because he can speak to Pokemon, a rare gift that's not always accepted as a good thing. Soul doesn't know WHY Silver antagonizes him, but he tells Rune the word is hurtful and they shouldn't repeat it.

Rune wonders if Soul doesn't like speaking to Pokemon, since he rarely addresses them directly when other humans are around. Soul attempts to reassure the Togepi that he likes talking to them, but mentions that situation has nothing to do with Luce. However, Rune is not talking about Luce. They sense Soul's deeper feelings...something hidden beneath his concern for Luce...something that Soul sees as "his fault". Rune asks why Soul feels guilty. Soul shatters at the question.

Through tears, Soul confesses his "sin": his "gift" came from killing his best friend. Chapter 5 ends.

Bay sighs as he takes in the situation. He knows Soul well enough to know that he won't give up on Luce, even if Prof. Elm doesn't support him. Bay decides he will support Soul as a friend, even if he personally doesn't care about Luce. However, he has a question. Bay asks Soul about "revive", not knowing what it is. Fear and Marbelle also ask, wondering what's so bad about it. Soul explains that revive is a medicine...a human-made drug for Pokemon that ended up being one of the worst things ever.

Soul explains that revive was created by Silph Co. and touted as a "cure-all" for Pokemon, alleging that the drug made Pokemon stronger. The medicine was pushed on and promoted by the League. However, given the nature of the League, battles tailored to more than beginner level proved too difficult for the Pokemon doped up on revive and resulted in the deaths of thousands of Pokemon.

It was later discovered that revive overstimulated the system and caused heart failure. Many of these sudden deaths occurred in the middle of official matches. The League banned the drug and Silph Co. was sued. Official production stopped, but the recipe somehow got leaked, so now, revive is available in the Underground Circuit with little to no regulations, making it even MORE dangerous. Soul feels, given this, Silver using revive on Luce is only delaying the inevitable...and that's why he "needs" to save him. Rune picks up on something else, though, sensing Soul's thoughts. They ask if Soul is a "freak". Soul flinches at the question.

Soul calls Prof. Elm at the Pokemon Center informing him of what he's learned about Luce and Silver. Prof. Elm is shocked at the news, but while he appreciates the update, he wonders if it was truly just a coincidence that Soul ran into the thief...

Soul admits that he's been following Silver and explains that he feels responsible for what happened. Soul believes Luce deserves a better trainer than Silver and thought if he could get Luce back that he could prove himself and make up for his mistake in letting the thief get away. However, Prof. Elm is not quelled. Soul pivots and states he's still doing his actual job as well but before he can continue, the professor tells Soul that he needs to stop.

Prof. Elm reminds Soul that he's still recovering from a major, traumatic injury...one that nearly cost him his life. Hearing that Soul is chasing a dangerous criminal who, apparently drugs his Pokemon does not set his mind at ease. Prof. Elm states that he'll keep the police report active, but based on what he now knows, he feels Luce might just be a lost cause. Soul disagrees. However, he can't vocalize his discontent, so he makes a vague promise to be safe to appease his boss. Elm "accepts" this and promises to send Soul some material for his work. The call ended, Soul pounds the table in frustration, knowing he's cornered himself. He's essentially lied to his boss and put his job at risk...but he's too stubborn to give up on Luce. Bay looks on with concern.

Soul realizes that Silver used a revive on Luce and chews him out about it, claiming the trainer has further endangered the Quilava's life. Silver shouts back that he knew the correct dosage to give, so all's fine. He claims he wanted Luce to get better and that he's not a tyrant...he knows his Pokemon's limits. Soul disagrees. From the lab assistant's perspective, Silver has done nothing but push Luce's limits, be a general menace and pain in the ass. Luce retorts that Soul is the one who doesn't care about him, seeing the Quilava as a lab experiment. Luce chooses to live "freely" with Silver, whom he believes will help him achieve his revenge. Soul questions what Luce means while Silver pulls out a scratched up Pokeball...

Silver unleashes his Sneasel, who cuts Bay's vines. Luce blows a smokescreen to blind Soul while Silver escapes. Silver demands Soul stop coming after him and avoid Team Rocket moving forward. Soul and Bay realizes that Silver has once again escaped, but now, they question what "revenge" Luce is after...

Soul snaps that he's not a freak, causing Silver to flinch. Soul crashes out completely on Silver, bringing up alleged failures on his part and reducing him to a petty thief. Silver, fed up with Soul's harsh judgements, brings out Luce and dares Soul to take him. Soul is shocked to see Luce has now evolved into a Quilava...and is still very unhappy to see him.

Soul tries to reason with Luce, but the Quilava will hear none of it. He claims that Soul only saw him as an experiment and was never out to help him, meanwhile Silver healed him. Soul asks how Silver cured him, especially since Luce was slowly dying back in the lab. Silver, who can't understand the conversation, realizes he may be in trouble, but before he can stop his Pokemon, Luce reveals the truth: Silver used a revive on him.

Bay's capture tries to escape, but he refuses to let go. Soul comes over to see that Bay has caught...Silver! Silver isn't thrilled but his sour mood is temporarily subsided when he notices Soul's wounds...

Soul forces himself to calm down, telling himself that there's nothing to be ashamed of. He tells Silver that he was attacked by Rocket. Silver explodes, wanting to know if Soul actually fought Rocket. Soul tries to explain, but Silver continues ranting, calling Rocket dangerous and claiming Soul is lucky to have survived. Soul snaps, not feeling "lucky" at all, retorting that he was tortured and his Pokemon nearly died. The researcher demands to know why Silver is in town and wonders if he was the one who brought Rocket here, perhaps in an attempt to sell off Luce. Silver vehemently denies this but deflects from giving a reason for his presence. He claims that Rocket must be weak if Soul was able to beat them, and sneers that, perhaps Rocket fled once they realized Soul was a "freak". Soul snaps at the insult.

The stranger notices how peaceful things are in Azalea village, much to their confusion. Bay notices the stranger and thinks they're part of Team Rocket. He lashes out a vine to capture the stranger...

Jasper goes to Davey, asking to train too. He feels bad for being so antagonistic to Soul up to this point and wishes to make it up to him. Davey, however, cannot understand the Gastly, much to Jasper's embarrassment. However, the sentiment is felt and Davey welcomes Jasper to join them in training. Bay also invites Jasper along. Delighted to be included, Japer endeavors to do his best.

Later at Mr. Kurt's house, Dave returns with Soul's team. Soul asks how the training went, to which his dad replies that things went well. Soul is surprised that Jasper even joined in. Soul mentions that Bugsy challenged him to a battle. The Pokemon are excited for the most part, though Soul is still somewhat hesitant. Davey asks if Soul is ready for that, to which he replies that he doesn't know...he wants to move on, but he's still scared. Odette volunteers to take on the gym.

Soul is a bit worried at Odette fighting since she's only just recovered from her injury in the last gym battle. However, Odette states that's why she wants to fight now--she wants to prove her strength, and she hopes that this will inspire Soul to see his own strength. Odette believes her victory will be because of Soul's dedication to her wellbeing. Willow agrees. While she admits that the League is not directly tied to Soul's goals, him proving his strength may boost his confidence and help with his research indirectly. Davey also offers words of encouragement, noting that while his son can speak to Pokemon, he still has to learn how to understand their "hearts". He offers to train Soul as well. Seeing everyone encourage him perks Soul up and he decides to embrace the challenge after all.

Bay tells Soul that he wishes to protect him. The Bayleef explains that Pokemon have many reasons to fight, but the biggest one is often to protect what's important to them, and for Bay, Soul is that important thing. Soul is moved by this, and lets his team go with his dad to train. Dave takes the team out and leaves Soul and Rune to continue resting.

Bugsy pops in to check on Soul. Seeing him still down, the gym leader opts to challenge Soul to a Pokémon battle, much to Soul's confusion.

Bugsy demands Soul to come to his gym in a week for a scheduled battle. Soul attempts to decline, but Bugsy refuses to take no for an answer. Soul is left flabbergasted at the experience. Meanwhile, Dave takes inventory of Soul's team and at a glance, puts together their strengths in battle for training. Fear in particular is excited, sensing that Dave is a talented trainer. Marbelle thinks that Fear's tone is somewhat of a slight to Soul, but the Rattata clarifies that all she means is that Soul's dad has experience and she's excited to learn. Jasper watches the team prepare with a sad expression...

Soul recalls that recovery is a process. He's told that his injuries are okay and is released from the hospital. He recounts how the town is thankful and helpful, giving him items, teaching his Pokémon new moves, and offering him exclusive services like Mr. Kurt's exclusive acorn-made Pokeballs. Despite all this, however, Soul is not well...

Soul jolts awake from a nightmare. Bay calls out, catching his attention. Soul reaches out and Bay comes over, allowing the hug that Soul needs to try and calm down. Dad peeks in on his son and leaves shortly after.

The next day, Davey goes to check on Soul. Soul claims to be alright, slightly annoyed at how every seems to be babying him. Davey offers to train Soul's team, much to the researcher's confusion. Davey claims Soul's team looks a bit bored. He's proven right when everyone jumps at the opportunity presented. Soul, however, demands to know why his Pokémon still want to fight after their harrowing experience.

Soul pulls out the Pokedex to scan Rune, discovering that they're part psychic type. He goes on a little self rant about the Togepi species, fascinated by Rune's abilities. Rune is confused at first, but Soul reassures them that they are incredible, comforting them and letting them know that they did nothing wrong. He thanks the Togepi for trusting him.

Rune thanks Soul for listening. The two cuddle together and go to sleep. Meanwhile, Bay thanks Willow. The Flaaffy wonders why she's being thanked. Bay states that she's been kind and supportive since joining the team. He admits, since Soul can be closed off emotionally, he feels a little guilty for dragging the human out of his comfort zone and on this journey, but Willow shuts that down, stating that she believes Soul is kind and wouldn't want Bay to feel bad. Besides, there's no need to thank her, since she's only doing her part as a teammember.

Bay pauses at Willow's words before smiling and saying something in a foreign language. Willow wants to know what Bay said but he playfully refuses to answer. They go back and forth a bit before Fear, off camera, yells at them to shut up so she can sleep. Bay and Willow apologize. Scene fades to black.
