The air is icy cold, the temperature hovering just below freezing, my breath pluming as I gaze down the near-quiet street. The muted glow of lamp posts goes almost unnoticed, the world bathed instead in the cool light of the fat, gibbous moon. A passing car breaks the silence, an unwelcome, but blessedly brief interruption. As its hum and rattle disappear into the background murmur of Brooklyn, I return my attention to that looming moon. A lone cloud passes across its face, blown by a distant wind I cannot feel. I breathe in the scene a final time, then turn back to my door and the warmth of home. To hear what I feel, here's some more (US) morning mellow.

There’s some debate as to whether or not he actually said this, but apocryphal or not, I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. “Do not be afraid of spending quality time by yourself. Find meaning or don't find meaning, but steal some time and give it freely and exclusively to your own self. Opt for privacy and solitude. That doesn't make you antisocial or cause you to reject the rest of the world. Another hazy start to the day, with a muted sunrise and everything as quiet as Brooklyn ever gets. It's a calming feeling, though, walking the near-silent, near-empty streets before the hectic world bursts awake. And whilst the weather is calling for rainy days ahead, for now it's that gloriously strange in-between time, those muting clouds on verge of pouring open, ready to wash away the dust and the heat.
