Student-run environmental research organizations can preserve institutional knowledge through structured training and peer mentoring. I showed that student-led training courses can be a successful and exportable strategy to onboard students and continue conducting vital research. (6/6) #POEcap
The course helped expedite learning for new lab members, which reduces institutional knowledge loss. The SSC is planning to continue to offer this training class in the future due to these results and positive feedback. It will continue to improve the course in the future. (5/6) #POEcap
Overall, students who took the training course, on average, doubled their knowledge across all topics (Figure 1). They also had more well-rounded knowledge than direct-entry peers (Figure 2) Competency of the 14 topics was measured on a scale of one to five (1=lowest, 5=highest). (4/6) #POEcap
During my internship, I studied the efficacy of a training course the SSC piloted with 18 prospective lab members.
I surveyed students at the beginning and end of the quarter on their self-reported competency in 14 subject areas related to the SSC’s Business, Science, and Tech teams. (3/6) #POEcap
I studied how these organizations can better preserve institutional knowledge through a case study with the Student Seaglider Center.
My research question:
Can an onboarding/training class better preserve institutional knowledge in student-run environmental research organizations? (2/6) #POEcap
Student-run environmental research organizations can benefit
undergraduate students as they gain real-world skills and experience, but these programs also suffer from high turnover when students graduate. Turnover causes institutional knowledge loss, which threatens long-term success. (1/6) #POEcap
With the first quarter of my capstone sequence coming to an end, it felt surreal and motivating to witness peers at the end of the tunnel. Right now, collecting data and analyzing my future findings seems daunting- but I’ll continue moving forward with tonight’s success as a guiding light #POEcap
