The Linux Age Verification situation is escalating & other Linux Weekly News YouTube video by The Linux Experiment

Linux age checks are no longer fringe. California passed AB 1043, Colorado has a similar Bill moving, and GrapheneOS is pushing back. If age gates move into the OS, privacy and software freedom lose.

Should the OS ever become an age gate?

AI systems are enabling mass surveillance in the US, and there is no national law that 'meaningfully limits' the use of this data For decades, cars dictated urban planning in the United States. Few could have predicted that they would one day also double as nodes for surveillance. In thousands of towns and cities across the U.S., automatic license plate readers have been installed at major intersections, bridges and highway off-ramps. Article continues below These camera-based systems capture the license plate data of passing vehicles, along with images of the vehicle and time stamps. More recently, these systems are using artificial intelligence to create a vast, searchable database that can be integrated with other law enforcement data repositories. As a scholar of technology policy and data governance, I see the expansion of automatic license plate readers as a source of deep concern. It's happening as government authorities are seeking ways to target immigrant and transgender communities, are already using AI to monitor protests, and are considering deploying AI systems for mass surveillance. Eyes on the road Using cameras to track license plates dates to the 1970s, when the U.K. was embroiled in a long-simmering conflict with the Irish Republican Army. The Met, London's police force, developed a system that used closed-circuit television cameras to monitor and record the license plates of vehicles entering...

Proposals to ban social media for children Supporters say a ban would help protect children online, but others argue it could have unintended consequences.

The UK is still pushing under 16 social media restrictions. Age gating rarely stays simple, and privacy usually pays the price. Safer tools matter, but so do freedom and user choice.

Türkiye expands Black Sea surveillance amid Russia-Ukraine conflict The spillover of Ukraine-Russia war continues threatening the security in Black Sea. Türkiye has identified 275 suspicious objects in the Black Sea to date, including drifting mines, kamikaze drones and unmanned surface vehicles, the Ministry of National Defense said Saturday. Of them, 29 have been neutralized, the ministry said in a statement. Amid threats posed by drifting mines during the Russia-Ukraine War, an agreement was signed on Jan. 11, 2024, under Türkiye’s leadership, with the participation of Romania and Bulgaria, to establish the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Task Group (MCM Black Sea). The statement noted that since March 26, 2022, following the outbreak of the war, the Turkish navy has continuously carried out reconnaissance, surveillance, patrol and disposal operations targeting mines, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unexploded ordnance in the Black Sea. "As part of efforts to protect our maritime jurisdiction areas, under Operation Black Sea Harmony, two frigates, one submarine, one patrol vessel, one maritime patrol aircraft, one helicopter and one UAV are deployed. For mine surveillance activities, two minehunter ships, one fast attack craft, three helicopters, one underwater defense team and one UAV are on duty,” the statement said. It added that during operations...

Viral ‘Palm Beach Pete’ Fuels Identity Debate as Online Sleuths Weigh Twin Records, Facial Comparisons, and Plastic-Surgery Emails On the Polarity channel, host “Vietnam Vinnie” examines the viral rise of “Palm Beach Pete,” a Florida man who closely resembles Jeffrey Epstein, reviewing public records that identify him as Peter Sim(l)/Simmel and noting a verified twin, long-standing real estate career, and claimed athletic accolades. The program also surveys unrelated controversies—from cryptic White House posts tied to a new app to a hacker group’s unverified leak claims—while urging caution about privacy, misidentification, and speculative narratives that invoke cloning or UAP-adjacent themes.
