It was nerve-wracking yesterday to see if the ice would move away from our central HAUSGARTEN, but it did 🤗! So, I am super excited to sample my experiments deployed 9 years ago to study plastics impact on organisms & biogeochemistry of the seafloor,a prime plastic sink. #PS143
ROV Kiel6000 is in the water for its 1st mission to collect sediment samples in a lander-based mesocosm experiment (1500m depth) that had started in 2023 to study the impact of #Oceanacidification (#climatechange) on small #deepsea organisms & biogeochemistry! #PS143

Today, we completed the work at our station in the Molloy Deep, the deepest known point of the #Arctic (5500m). We caught plenty of specimen (especially sea cucumbers :) with the epibenthic sledge and #plastic, also on film during our camera transect (by Autun Purser). #PS143
We just completed our first CTD cast, primarily for calibration purposes! This working horse of oceanography measures salinity, temperature and depth, and its rosette can take water samples at different depths throughout the water column for all sorts of purposes. #PS143 #Arctic @www.helmholtz.de
Still steaming north to the AWI #Hausgarten Observatory in the #Arctic #DeepSea ☺️.
By now, all the equipment has been moved from the containers into our laboratories or onto the main working deck. Looking forward to getting started 🤗! #PS143
Yay, we crossed the polar circle ❄️! We still have some way to go though and will probably only start our station work in Fram Strait on Friday. Temperatures have already dropped notably despite sunny spells.
#PS143
After a stormy night (Beaufort 9), the sea has calmed down a bit and we are approaching the Polar circle.
I could watch this forever! 🤩 #OceanDevotion #PS143
After finishing bunkering last night, we started our way north and RV #Polarstern is now ploughing steadily through the waves 🌊 of the #NorthSea. So nice to breathe the fresh sea breeze again, especially on #WorldOceanDay!
