It is very difficult to write a story about multiple characters going through their own stories but the only one who actually matters is the narrator you may not realize you've met until the end. A narrator who keeps breaking the fourth wall and arguing with themself.

Looking at #PaleBlood again, which has been revised to death because the series it begins is full of time loop shenanigans so I need to get things just right.
The overarching mystery of the book and reason for its title is never explained. I think the narrator is doing this on purpose to hurt me.

Entirely unrelated to that last post, I've come to the tree orgy scene in #PaleBlood and there's a note to myself what is very threatening.
"If you delete this scene I will personally tear out your eyeballs."

If there's real people in there it wasn't on purpose. I'm in most but rarely in obvious or intentional ways, stuff just leaks in.
There is someone in #PaleBlood who says something which was said to me almost verbatim. I didn't realize until editing though... kept it because it fit.
#PaleBlood characters could feasibly do this and it would absolutely be Ron alone and he's going to discuss pop culture and the music scene with random tangents about how to properly care for your synthpets featuring incredibly indepth studies on their healthy and intelligence.

Mine tend to get more 'themselves' as time goes on and I learn who that is. However, a character in #PaleBlood who is aggressive and bigoted (but I am told likeable and charming somehow) does soften significantly toward the end.

Lightning crackled through the shadowed clouds above the slums, igniting the air with electric snaps of brilliant blue before those clouds popped, releasing a torrent of freezing rain on the streets below. The smog-tainted waters collected in puddles and gutters, glistened in the glaring neon signs that speckled the grimy dark of the city, and those lights should have dazzled. As Kiki padded along the rough asphalt they should have wowed her but each flash and stutter only hammered against frazzled nerves. They reminded her of where she was, and where she was not. On any other evening, Kiki would have been curled up with her idiot brother in the warmth of her human’s lap. Yet the evening she longed for had spilled into the improbable, and the miserable, and so she had rain on her fur and a chill stab in her paws. Paws which ached—the blood had dried but the pain remained—and she kept to the smooth screens of the sidewalks as best she could. But the trail of the scent she chased, weaker in the rinse of foul waters, didn’t keep to the screens or the easy paths. It didn’t lead her into familiar streets or known smells. It dipped under thick metal bridges, along rough stone walkways and across long-buried train tracks where streetlamps couldn’t follow. Kiki had been forced to hop, to climb, and to crawl and the soft whites of her fur blackened with her efforts. But it didn’t matter. None of it mattered.
