Happy #FossilFriday from under the microscope with this freshwater acritarch!
While we don’t know the full evolutionary tree of this tiny fellow, some people believe they may have descended from algal ancestors. Thanks @paleotrin.bsky.social !

I’m having real issues #focusstacking with #Helicon for these pollen grains. If anything it just seems to lose definition of features that can be seen in the individual photos. Happy to receive advice from any #palynology folk!
A trinocular microscope with a mounted Canon 90D camera displays a pollen grain which is also shown on the computer monitor.
One of the challenges of #palynology is that you don’t know if there is #pollen in your sample until right at the end of the process.
A stereo microscope sits on my desk with a rack holding eppendorf tubes. Each contains one tiny dried flower and hopefully some pollen. Next to it sits my old faithful centrifuge and on the top computer monitor is FreeCad with a new design to 3D print.
Tonight I had one job. No #invertebrates, it is #palynology night.
1/2
Simply dissect some herbarium specimens (tiny flowers about 3mm across). Filter them if possible and spin down the #pollen in the centrifuge to end up (hopefully) with a small yellow pellet at the bottom of the eppendorf.

A woman in a floral button down shirt and tan pants stands at the front of the classroom, presenting her senior thesis. She is gesturing out towards the room while on a slide titled “geologic setting” and is explaining the background of where her rocks come from.
And with that, two years of work comes to an end (kinda, not really). So proud of this work and where it has taken me. #Devonian spores have a special place in my heart!

an AI-generated image of "several tricolporate pollen grains from different families, shown in polar and equatorial views", but really a nicely shaded display of intricate pasta types
If instead of video we ask only for images, we could use #OpenAI's #Dall-e3. For the prompt "several tricolporate pollen grains from different families, shown in polar and equatorial views", we get this wonderful display of pasta or colonial wasp nests. #palynology 🌿🧪
Maybe #Sora is meant to just produce fun videos for kids? This junk, in response to "tricolpate pollen grains viewed under light microscopy, in several plant families". These remind me of extinct Cretaceous Wodehousia pollen, (probably an extinct angiosperm lineage), but c'mon. #palynology 🌿🧪 1/2
oh dear, this is #OpenAI's #Sora's response to "several tricolporate pollen grains shown in polar and equatorial views". These do look a *little* like tiny bony fruits, but somehow it does not understand what "tri" might signify? #palynology #pollen 🧪🌿
