"I’m unwelcome. I can’t go easy on them. It’s like I’m a burden. I’m not at all dissenting. I had to get out of the way. And so it happened."

Despite this, Parajanov’s talents gave him some authority in the camps. Given the lack of art supplies, he made bas-relief medallions from tin foil. They are now exhibited at the Parajanov Museum in Yerevan.
The campaign for Parajanov’s release was international and rare in its scale. He was publicly supported by famous artists, including the majority of famous film directors of the time: Godard, Truffaut, Fellini, Antonioni and Buñuel. The support of writer Louis Aragon was a deciding factor. He was held in high regard in the USSR due to his socialist views. Aragon spoke to Leonid Brezhnev about Parajanov during his visit to Moscow, after which the director was freed, a year before the end of his sentence.
In December 2023, 50 years after Parajanov’s first arrest and 33 years after his death, he was personally rehabilitated by the National Rehabilitation Commission in Ukraine due to the political motive of his case. There were no “article-based” rehabilitation campaigns for the victims of homophobic legislation in any post-Soviet countries.
Sergei Parajanov said, “I’m an Armenian who was born in Georgia and incarcerated in a Russian prison for Ukrainian nationalism.”

Last night's Unity March as part of the #TbilisiProtests. Small but brought together some ethnic Armenians, Azerbaijanis, Georgians, Jews, etc. Interesting longish chat with one of those coordinating tonight. More to say but first will post more pics. #Parajanov
