Review – ‘The High Republic Adventures: Pathfinders’ #1 Teases a Murder Mystery in Safe Reintroduction to Era The High Republic is back with this week’s first issue of _The High Republic Adventures: Pathfinders_. Dark Horse’s new series, written by George Mann, takes place 20 years after the events of the publishing initiative’s Phase 2. Issue #1’s setup is relatively simple. Introduce the new Jedi Master and Padawan pair at the center of the conflict, tease what they’re up against, and leave the major developments for future issues. As a return to the High Republic, this first issue leaves a bit to be desired. Those expecting the era’s penchant for huge game-changing moments and action will have to wait. Mann plays it safe and succeeds in hooking you, which is the most important thing an issue #1 has to do, but there isn’t much beyond that. The High Republic has spoiled us so much over the years that it’s weird to read what is ostensibly a soft reboot. On a grander scale, while not being tied to the Nihil story has to be freeing from a creative standpoint, it only underscores that the series is fighting two battles. 1) Can it stand out enough on its own to recommend to non-hardcore High Republic readers? 2) Is there still enough High Republic juice left to squeeze? **Spoilers ahead…** (W) George Mann (A) Partha Pratim, Jagdish Kumar (CA) Jake Bartok The opening pages follow a salvage merchant stumbling across the dead body of Jedi Master Atticus Cale, which is a name you only know if you are a completionist and read _Echoes of Fear_ (which you absolutely should read, no matter your investment in the High Republic). This immediately sets the stage for something potentially serious. What could possibly catch Atticus off guard? This was a really good eye-catching start. Enter Jedi Master Temesh and their Padawan, Anula. Their Pathfinder team is tasked with investigating the incident. There aren’t any significant identifying features that help these Jedi stand out amongst the legions of pairings we’ve been introduced to before. I do like their design and general feel, though. Temesh strikes me as the kind of Jedi who goes with the flow, and while he is a no-nonsense kind of guy, he isn’t afraid to indulge in a bit of tomfoolery. Which is perfect, because Anula is all about that. She sports an unkempt head of hair that I don’t think we’ve seen a ton of in _Star Wars_ , where Jedi are often thought of as monk-like figures and model citizens. Anula has kind of bedhead a preteen will roll out of bed with, refuse to run a comb through, and you, as the parent, just have to deal with it because it isn’t worth the trouble. I’m interested in seeing more of their dynamic; hopefully, there are more layers to these characters, as that is what the High Republic is all about. They investigate, and upon stumbling on some complicated politics in the region and recovering the dead Jedi at its center, the stage is set for a miniseries that may end up being a slow build. But as I like to say when it comes to George Mann, let him cook. He’ll get us there. The murder mystery at the core is intriguing, and the way in which Atticus Cale died is disturbing enough to make me stick around to get answers. A sonic weapon that can kill a Jedi? Fascinating. _The High Republic Adventures: Pathfinders_ #1 does its job and nothing more. Partha Pratim and Jagdish Kumar’s art is serviceable. There are nice flashes throughout, so I’ll be watching to see what they can do when the story picks up. Michael Atiyeh’s colors fill out the rest of this world, selling the horror of Atticus’ death in the opening. There is nice contrast between that and the rest of the comic. Overall, George Mann finds himself with an opening playing field where he can do virtually whatever he wants. Next issue he returns to his comfort zone: monsters and weird stuff. It’s good to be back in the High Republic. _**RATING: 7/10**_ The High Republic Adventures: Pathfinders #1 _is available now wherever comics are sold.
