The text "Save the Playground!" is imposed over a historic marker. "The site of Old Peoria, a European settlement in the Illinois country, was established by the French at or near this place in the winter of 1691-1692. Chalice says that trash bin at the playground is right near the historic marker for Old Peoria.
Established in 1691, Peoria is the oldest permanent European settlement in Illinois! And Detweiller Playground is thought to be the site of that 334-year-old settlement!
