Going into making new Perisynti record by very different approach. We started this not by song writing or rehearsing, but from recording equipment, drumsound and over all soundscape and atmosphere first before there's even one riff ready. We're going to record the drumtracks + first guitar immediately after figuring out song structures. Writing will be based on jamming and intuition rather than logic. So basically the order has been reversed.
The drum setup is interesting. There's 8" and 10" rototoms, 14" and 15" square rack toms in concert tom setup so resonant heads removed. There's 14"x6,5" Tama Rockstar steel sanredrum, very high and open tuning, wires super loose so they're barely making a difference. FLoor tom is 18"x16" with very open tuning. All toms have a massive reverb while everything else is very dry. Cymbals are old broken junk, Hi-hat is 13" Paiste 101, Ride cymbals have unique setup, there's two Paiste Signature 22" Dry heavy rides with top one upside down, they're on top of each other so that both can be oplayed with one hand which makes absolutely insane drumparts possible. Both are also dampened to extra dry sound so there's almost no sustain at all. Then there's aux ride which is Paiste 2002 15" Crunch Hats bottom, it rings like a bell and sounds really weird so ride cymbals have extreme contast in sound.
All mics are cheap crap t.bone ones which are surprisingly good, overheads are dynamic t.bone mics as well, the exact same model used for everything, clos emic for ride cymbals is Shure SM57.
There will be some little tweaks but almost all sounds are ready. we're using Yamaha mixer for mixing and recod drums into a one stereotrack via old two track Tascam soundcard, its the first model they ever released back around 2001 or so. Took a bit of trickery to install it to Win10 machine.
Rack toms are super dry, Rototoms really open, floor tom massively open and snare drum has the crazy overtone, I need to see if I can still make it more ringy, it'll sound crazy with the extreme dynamic range. Similar to how the first Perisynti demo had it.
The whole setup has a strange combination of dry and open sounds. I kinda wish that cymbals would still be drier and toms would have even slightly more reverb.
This ride setup is insane. I've dreamed of doing the two rides on top of each other thing for ages and now its time to try it out. And we got two Signature Dry Heave rides to do it with, they sound amazing when dampened even a bit more for recording, let alone using two at once. Lower one is mine, from 1989 and top one is Krimn's stuff, his is bit never, 1991 but still with the same hammering. Then third ride cymbal is bottom of 2002 15" Crunch Hats. Its so insanely thick and rings like a bell its very unique sounding cymbal. One of the coolest Paiste cymbals I've ever had.
Drums done, recording equipment done. I would say this setup is quite exotic. Details in alt text. There's lessons from last +20 years in play and something I've never done before.
