Rangers Should Turn to Youth Amid Offensive Struggles The New York Rangers finally scored their first goal at Madison Square Garden this season on Monday night. But they lost the game 3-1 to the Minnesota Wild, their fourth consecutive loss on home ice. After scoring four goals in their win over the Montreal Canadiens (in Montreal) on Saturday, fans were hoping their offense was starting to wake up, but that was not the case last night. With their top players struggling and the rest of the lineup not built to make up for it, now is the time for the Rangers to turn to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, Hartford Wolf Pack, to find a spark to help create some offense and start winning these close games. ## Rangers’ Top Players Struggling to Score The Rangers’ top six are talented on paper, but the on-ice results have not been there, and an injury to Vincent Trocheck, suffered against the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 9, has not helped. The top two centers on this team now are J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad, and they only have two goals each. Artemi Panarin had no goals through the first six games this season, but he has scored in back-to-back contests, which is reason for optimism. Alexis Lafreniere and Will Cuylle are also expected to have big seasons, but they only have one goal each. After Trocheck’s injury, Connor Sheary moved into the top six, but he has been invisible, and at this point in his career, he is best in a bottom-six role. New York Rangers left wing Alexis Lafrenière (Dennis Schneidler-Imagn Images) This is why the Rangers should be looking to the AHL for an answer. They have players in Hartford who could step into a top-six role now, and they would look better than what we’ve seen so far, because outside of the top six, the lineup is not built to make up for the lack of goal scoring. ## Rangers’ Poor Roster Construction Right now, the bottom six is more focused on being defensively responsible than scoring goals. The third line has seen a mix of players, including Noah Laba, Johnny Brodzinski, Juuso Parssinen, and Taylor Raddysh, who have two goals combined. The fourth line of Adam Edstrom, Sam Carrick, and Matt Rempe has been the Rangers’ most consistent trio to start the season, but none of them are goal scorers, so while they have been getting chances, they have not hit the back of the net. **Related:Rangers Should Promote Gabe Perreault to the NHL** Outside of Adam Fox, there has also been little to no offense coming from the backend. Carson Soucy and Matt Robertson are the only other blueliners to have scored a goal this season. Vladislav Gavrikov was brought in for his superb defensive game, and he has been great on the defensive side of the puck so far. Will Borgen is another defensive defenseman who should not be relied on for offense. Because the Rangers don’t have another offensive-minded player on the backend, Braden Schneider has seen time on the second power-play unit, which is a role he never played before this season. ## Who Should the Rangers Call Up? Among forwards, the three big names are Gabe Perreault, Brett Berard, and Brennan Othmann. Perreault is projected to be a top-six forward, and right now, the Rangers have a hole in their top six. He could easily replace Sheary in that role and would immediately be a more impactful player. Berard and Othmann could also fill that hole in the top six, but they would be better fits in the bottom six. TBerard would bring his speed and tenacity, while Othmann would bring his shooting mentality. New York Rangers left wing Brennan Othmann (Dennis Schneidler-Imagn Images) On defense, Scott Morrow is known for his offensive game and puck-moving ability from the blue line. He has already spent time with the team this season, but did not play, and right now, he is the kind of player the Rangers need. They don’t have any good puck-moving defensemen outside of Fox, so he would be a breath of fresh air. Morrow wouldn’t have to play top-four minutes, but he would be more useful on the power-play than a player like Schneider. The Rangers need another puck-moving defenseman now, so he needs to be called up and inserted into the lineup to see what he can provide. Overall, the Rangers have played well to start the season. Their 3-4-1 record is not indicative of their performance, but the lack of offense has been a key reason why they have not won more games. It’s early in the season, so the Rangers have time to fix this issue, and they can do that now by inserting more young players into the lineup who can bring more offense than what they’ve been getting.

Rangers Scratching Gabe Perreault Proves 54 Years of Lessons Weren’t Enough On Wednesday morning, Mollie Walker of the _New York Post_ reported that New York Rangers top prospect Gabe Perreault would be a healthy scratch after just three NHL games. Soon after, head coach Peter Laviolette confirmed that Brett Berard would draw into the lineup against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night while Perreault would watch from the press box. On the surface, it may seem like a routine roster tweak. But in reality, it’s another baffling decision that raises serious questions about the Rangers’ approach to asset management and player development, a recurring issue that continues to haunt the organization. ## Burning a Year of Perreault’s ELC for What? On Mar. 31, the Rangers agreed to terms with Perreault on an entry-level contract (ELC). As Perreault turns 20 before the end of the year, his ELC is not eligible to slide a year. As a result, the Rangers opted to burn the first year of his ELC, meaning he will become a restricted free agent after the 2026–27 season rather than the 2027–28 season had he signed after July 1. When Perreault signed his deal, the Rangers were tied with the Montreal Canadiens for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, though Montreal had two games in hand. The Rangers went on to beat the Minnesota Wild in Perreault’s debut, a game in which he played well and could have easily picked up a few points. Now, just a week later, the Rangers have dropped games to the New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning, while the Canadiens have gone on a six-game winning streak. As a result, the Rangers now have a tragic number, the opposite of a magic number, of three. They are all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Yet, Perreault will not play tonight. ## Perreault Has Earned More, Not Less This decision makes no sense and reflects a long-standing issue with how they handle their young players that has plagued the Rangers. It aligns with the organization’s troubling history of mismanaging assets and prospects. What was the point of burning a year off their top prospect’s ELC just to have him sit in the press box for what would have been his fourth career NHL game? Peter Laviolette, head coach of the New York Rangers (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images) It would be understandable if Perreault wasn’t ready for the NHL, but he is. Yes, he could use a bit more size, something he’s acknowledged himself, but if Alexis Lafrenière tips in a perfect pass, or Johnny Brodzinski’s shot doesn’t ring off the post, or Andrei Vasilevskiy doesn’t just barely get a pad down in time on a Sam Carrick attempt, Perreault would be sitting on three points in three games. Yes, hockey is a results-driven sport, and none of those plays resulted in goals, but Perreault has generated multiple high-danger chances in his first few games. On the Carrick chance, he made a smart play on the forecheck, knocking down a clearing attempt and delivering a quick pass to the front of the net. The Lafrenière opportunity happened on one of his first NHL shifts. The Brodzinski chance came on the power play, yet Perreault’s second unit has barely seen the ice, while the first unit has gone just 3-for-49. Despite this promising start, Laviolette made the inexplicable decision to move Perreault out of the top six before the Lightning game on Monday and now has removed him from the lineup altogether. ## A Familiar Rangers Pattern: Mismanaging Youth It’s not just Perreault who’s been mishandled. Brennan Othmann, the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, has played his best hockey alongside Artemi Panarin and Vincent Trocheck. Yet Othmann, with just two points in 19 games, was pushed down to the fourth line and has received barely any power-play time despite excelling in that role both in juniors and with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Yes, two points in 19 games is underwhelming, but most of his games have come with limited ice time, often alongside Matt Rempe and Johnny Brodzinski. That line has been solid defensively, but it’s hardly a group known for offensive production, especially in a limited role. **Related:New York Rangers Are Running Out of Time to Save Their Season** This trend goes back years. The Rangers selected Kaapo Kakko second overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. He was quickly pulled from the power play and averaged just 14:17 of ice time during a season that was never supposed to be competitive. The following season, they selected Lafrenière first overall, and he averaged only 13:53 in his rookie season. It’s a clear pattern: young players do not get meaningful ice time in their formative years. Kakko is now off the team. Lafrenière, after a breakout last season, has regressed, even though he still has the second-most even-strength points on the team. Othmann is averaging 9:48 a night. Perreault, through three games, has averaged 13:31. Gabe Perreault, USNTDP (Jenae Anderson / The Hockey Writers) There are two ways to interpret this: either the Rangers have been extraordinarily unlucky, somehow managing to draft multiple top-tier prospects who just aren’t that good, or their approach is actively stunting development. Playing prospects in limited roles, avoiding defensive zone faceoffs, withholding power play time—these are all development killers. Just look at Kakko, now with the Seattle Kraken. He’s on pace for 51 points, with 18 goals and 33 assists, thriving in a consistent top-six role with power-play time. This is an organizational flaw and one that seems to have already severely shortened the Rangers’ competitive window. ## The Buchnevich Trade: A Turning Point in Mismanagement Finally, there’s the asset management question. After the 2020–21 season, then-newly appointed Rangers general manager Chris Drury traded Pavel Buchnevich to the St. Louis Blues in a deal that ranks among the worst in franchise history, receiving only Sammy Blais and a 2022 second-round pick in return. The motive behind the trade was to clear space for Kakko and Lafrenière to step into top-six roles. Yet, throughout that season, Lafrenière averaged under 14 minutes of ice time per game, while Dryden Hunt and Barclay Goodrow were regularly slotted into the top six. Rather than allowing Kakko and Lafrenière to play full seasons in prominent roles, the Rangers kept them on the third line. While the duo played well together, this likely hindered their development. Since trading Buchnevich, the Rangers have had a clear and persistent hole on the right wing alongside Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad, yet neither Kakko nor Lafrenière was ever given a consistent chance to fill that role. Now, the two young wingers waiting for opportunity are Othmann and Perreault, and they’re not getting it either. While Othmann hasn’t lit up the scoresheet, there is skill in his game. At the very least, he’s shown that he can finish checks, drive play, and take hits to make plays. But if the Rangers fail to give him and Perreault real opportunities in the top six and on the power play, they may never find out what they truly have, and worse, they risk repeating the same developmental missteps they made with Kakko and Lafrenière. ## The Lesson Still Hasn’t Been Learned There’s a lesson here, not just for the Rangers, but for the entire league: give your young players time to grow. It’s hard to place the blame on the prospects when New York’s track record speaks for itself. The Rangers have struggled for decades to develop top forward talent, and their most successful first-round pick upfront in the last half-century, J.T. Miller, reached his potential after leaving the organization before his return this season. Since Steve Vickers was drafted in 1971 – yes, 54 years ago – the best developmental success story the Rangers can point to for a first-round pick at forward is Kreider. That’s a damning indictment of an organization. With the decision to scratch Perreault in his fourth NHL game, it’s clear that the lesson still hasn’t been learned.

Rangers’ Top Prospect Gabe Perreault Expected to Sign ELC Per reporting from Emily Kaplan, Boston College sophomore and 23rd-overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Gabe Perreault, will be signing his entry-level contract (ELC) with the New York Rangers as early as today. Perreault and Boston College were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament last night after a 3–1 loss to the University of Denver Pioneers. His college career concludes with 35 goals and 73 assists for 108 points in 73 games. Perreault also won back-to-back gold medals at the World Junior Championship with the USA, tallying 10 points in seven games each time. ## What Perreault’s Arrival Means for the Rangers With nine games left in their season and tied for the second Eastern Conference wild-card spot with the Montreal Canadiens, who have one game in hand, the Rangers’ playoff hopes are coming down to the wire. The question is whether Perreault will immediately jump into the NHL or play games in Hartford with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Wolf Pack first. It could be beneficial for Perreault to play for the Rangers rather than the Wolf Pack, as the Rangers are in the midst of a playoff race while Hartford is playing out the dog days of its season and is almost certainly going to miss the playoffs. Perreault could be a spark plug for the Rangers. Gabe Perreault, USNTDP (Jenae Anderson / The Hockey Writers) He has been an elite player at every level throughout his career. In 2022-23, he recorded 132 points—the most in a single season by any player in the history of the United States National Team Development Program. This is a program that has produced the likes of Jack Hughes, Auston Matthews, Cole Caufield, Matthew Tkachuk, and Perreault’s now-former linemates: Will Smith of the San Jose Sharks and Ryan Leonard, who also signed his ELC with the Washington Capitals today and will likely make his NHL debut tomorrow when they take on the Boston Bruins. The Rangers could benefit from giving Perreault the same opportunity to prove he belongs. ## How the Rangers Should Deploy Perreault If the Rangers elect to immediately thrust Perreault into the lineup, they must not make the same mistakes they have made many times in the past. He needs to be given the opportunity to learn and grow, and not from low ice time hockey on the bottom six. He should be given a top-six role with power-play time. For the first time in nearly five seasons, the Rangers are actually using two power-play units, and Perreault should be on one of them. If the Rangers do decide to give him top-six minutes, playing him with J.T. Miller and Will Cuylle would allow him to thrive offensively, as he would be paired with two of the Rangers’ best defensive forwards. The issue with putting him on that line is that they seem to have found chemistry with Alexis Lafrenière recently and it may be tough to justify breaking them up. In that case, they could put him on a line with Vincent Trocheck and Artemi Panarin, but the Rangers could also slot Lafrenière back onto that line, which has struggled at times this season but was one of the best lines in hockey last season. **Related:Rangers Prospect Gabe Perreault Shining for Boston College** If Perreault is sent to Hartford, there is no question he should be playing top-line minutes and on the first power-play unit. The Wolf Pack have seven games left and sit nine points out of a playoff spot. There is no reason to not immediately play Perreault on the top line and power play if it is decided that he should begin his professional career in the AHL. ## A New Chapter Begins Finally, while the contract details have not been revealed, it is important to note that by signing Perreault to his entry-level contract—a three-year deal—before July 1, this season will count as the first year of that deal (the entry-level slide rule does not apply to him as he turns 20 before the end of the year.) This means Perreault will reach restricted free agency after the 2026–27 season. While that could raise concerns about accelerating his contract timeline, there is no reason not to sign the deal if the Rangers believe they are getting a player who can slot into the lineup and make an immediate impact. Whether it’s in New York or Hartford, Perreault is ready for the next step. He’s done everything you can ask of a prospect, and now it’s on the Rangers to give him the right opportunity. With the playoffs on the line, there’s no better time to find out what he can do.
