May 10th, we celebrate World #MigratoryBird Day with a story from our #Peru_BMAP
During a monitoring event, our team was counting birds flying near a pier. There were just too many. They paused, took a breath & tried again
This time, they used a block-counting strategy & recorded over 20000 birds!

The #Peru_BMAP team continues our annual #vegetation plot resurveys in the #Peruvian #Andes
This place is rightfully called "Las nubes" (The clouds), each time we've been there we've been surrounded by clouds

#Fieldwork time again, as we finish the first week of our annual #vegetation #monitoring efforts. This year we begin in the desertic #Pacific slopes of the #Andes. We can still see the effect of the summer rains. Sometimes one wonders: Is that really a #desert?

Grateful for the past two years as a researcher with Smithsonian’s #Peru_BMAP, where I’ve been leading an environmental DNA-based fish monitoring project in Peru’s central coast. This included creating & executing field protocols and bioinformatic pipelines for sequence processing and data analysis.
Very happy that our #bofedales paper in Vegetation Classification and Survey from @iavs5.bsky.social has been selected as Editor's choice for the final 2024 quarter. 🥂🙌💪

4/4 As always, it has been a pleassure to work on this with great colleagues. This paper is the result of great teamwork, and was led by Fiorella Eduardo and had critical input by Héctor Chuquillanqui, thanks to both!

3/4 Key findings:
➡️Positive #recovery trends
➡️An adaptable tool for different #scales and ecological contexts
This highlights the importance of combining continuous #monitoring with robust analyses to restore key #ecosystems in the #Andes

2/4 A key component of our approach is using a dynamic control mean, continuously updated to reflect the most recent #reference conditions. This ensures that the index is sensitive to both #temporal and #spatial changes.

1/4 🚨New paper🚨 How do we assess successful trajectories of #ecological #restoration in the #Peruvian #Andes?
In our latest study, we developed an index that combines #science and long-term #data to measure #vegetation #recovery in #Andean #grasslands

🔍 👓 Quite the challenge to meassure #leaf #traits for this characteristic #Andean #wetland plant: #Distichia muscoides. Just look at the size of the leaf (green tooth-shaped bit on the left of my palm) 2/3

#EcologyInTheAndes 1st day of our last 2024 #field activity: collecting #PlantFunctionalTraits for high-#Andean #wetland plants in #Ayacucho (#Peru) at 4400m elevation. We were welcomed by amazing #landscapes but lot's of rain and hail the rest of the day 1/3
