Here’s a version of the classic view of ‘The Treasury’ as you emerge from the Siq, a 1km long narrow canyon. This is the ‘Indiana Jones’ view

This photo is enhanced by the morning sunlight warming the face of the elaborate carved sandstone edifice.

Here’s a shot of some of the elaborate architectural details the Nabataeans carved into the sandstone. As traders and contemporaries of the Greeks, Romans, and late-period Egyptians, the Nabataeans liberally incorporated figures and design elements from these cultures.

A gorgeous view framed by the narrow canyon walls and capped by a signature Jordanian blue sky, enhanced by thin wisps of clouds.

A full view of ‘The Treasury’ with tourists in the foreground for scale and context. It’s noteworthy that, while ‘The Treasury’ is the most famous edifice in Petra, it is not the largest. High above Petra’s main valley, is another, larger edifice, called ‘The Monastery’.

Ironically, neither of these actually functioned as they have been named. They are thought to have been massive tombs or ceremonial sites.

For #Stunday, I’m going to the archive for classic shots of ‘The Treasury’ at #PetraJordan

The clouds ahead of us luckily never rained on this day — on our first visit to Petra. This picture was taken in November 2021, as we began to emerge from our COVID “bubble”. What a breathtaking way to re-enter the larger world.

The stall to right sold souvenirs, hats, scarves, etc. Similar stalls are informally set up by Bedouin proprietors throughout the vast historical park.

This dramatic #landscape is the Bab as-Siq (the Gateway to the Siq) at #PetraJordan. The rugged features foreshadow the amazing 3/4 mile long slot canyon that leads to the heart of Petra

At it’s narrowest, the canyon is only 9 feet wide. It’s maximum depth is over 600 feet

The Nabataeans were contemporaries of the Greeks and Romans. They were formerly nomadic, but learned how to harvest and manage water, and over the course of a couple hundred years they built their grand capital, Petra.

They became wealthy and powerful as they provided safe passage for camel caravans of the lucrative incense trade.

They carved edifices and tombs for the native reddish sandstone. Their most famous edifices are known today as the Treasury and the Monastery. The buildings pictured on the left of the photo are only “garden variety” for this immense city.

The large Roman-style amphitheater is entirely carved out of sandstone. Per our guide, it is the world’s largest carved amphitheater, seating about 6,000 spectators.

Who said that #UrbanGaze applies to only current cities?

This is a favorite shot from #PetraJordan — the capital and business hub of the Nabataean kingdom. It’s estimated that Petra was home to ~20,000 people

In this photo, we see multiple “buildings” and a large amphitheater

TBT - Throwback Thursday: 2016. I’ve been fortunate to be able to spend my birthday in some pretty amazing places (Paris, Prague, Helsinki, Montreal, Aruba, Rome, Tokyo)…but the most spectacular would have to be Petra, Jordan, nine years ago. #petra #petrajordan

The treasury at Petra, Jordan

Had to renew a visa by leaving Egypt for a day, so what better way to do that than to take a ferry to Jordan and spend a weekend exploring Petra?
