"This rudimentary sketch of Emperor Edelgard von Hresvelg and Queen Prithvi V/Petra of Brigid, and their consorts Byleth and Princess Dorothea, is theorised to be an early sketch by Varley of her later piece "The Majesties of Fódlan and Bridgid", 1190. This sketch was found in her sketchbooks in the renovations of Varley Castle thirty years after her death, and donated by her and Hubert von Vestra's children, Bernice and Hellena von Varley, in 1241. The relaxed, jovial figures of the two regents and their wives, strikes in comparison to the more muted, stoic portraits in the final work, and is considered to be the finer of the two art works."
