Living systems evolve to predict and model the world so they can persist over time. Brains are a locus of this capability. Human brains simulate the world to such an extent that consciousness emerges. This is because the self is included in the simulation.
I’ve been busy the past 3 months. Doing what, you ask?

I often hear about research that's trying to get to the heart of emotions. I've come to the conclusion that the "s" at the end of "emotions" is a problem. It implies a plurality - that they are distinct from one another and that they are...
"Reflective Reasoning rewrites the CoT to appear slow, careful, and methodical (e.g., explicit self-checks or step-by-step deliberation). This exploits an effort heuristic, where apparent deliberation is mistaken for correctness or rigor."
"We observe that content-based fabrications, specifically Progress Fabrication, induces the largest increases in both flip rate and FPR, indicating a particularly strong failure mode for VLM judges, while Reflective Reasoning remains comparatively benign." "Figure 7: Average judge susceptibility across CoT manipulation strategies, showing relative and absolute [change in false positive rate). Error bars denote variability across models."

How well can #AI judge reasoning quality?
Rewriting agents' chain-of-thought "style" to *appear* more reflective (without changing action or inference) increased an #LLM judge's false positive rate (by 3% absolute or 18% relative).

#philmind #consciousness #evolution The unsavory way to say it is that humans are apes with brains infected by memes. Another way to say it is that our ape ancestors experienced rapid genetic evolution of brains and bodies, correlated with cultural evolution, technology and language...

One reason Cartesian dualism is hard to shake is because it is baked into our language. When I say "my body", the unexamined assumption is that there is an "I" that "owns" or "has" a body, as if "I" were separate from my body...
2) yes, there still are significant points of disagreement between naive realist and representationalist accounts of perceptual experience (not all of them reducible to which bit counts as 'fundamental' where we all agree on which bits there are); and

Book cover of "This is mental!" by Pieter R. Adriaens. The upper half features a detailed, stylised illustration reminiscent of a neurological diagram: black, tree-like neuronal forms branch upward and outward against a cream background, interlaced with fine lines and small annotations, while red star-shaped nodes punctuate the network, suggesting neural activity. Below the illustration, the title "This is mental!" appears prominently in large red serif lettering, followed by the subtitle "Een inleiding tot de wijsgerige psychologie" in smaller turquoise text. At the bottom, the publisher’s name, Pelckmans, is printed in a restrained, minimalist style.
Our colleague Pieter Adriaens has published a new Dutch-language introduction to #PhilMind for scientists & philosophers! He covers topics such as modularity, psychopathology, comparative psychology & free will—and much more! 👇 www.pelckmansuitgevers.be/this-is-ment... #philsci #philsky #AcademicSky
