My Dad always called these guys "The Kings of the Forest", I always think of him when I see one. ๐

We enjoy watching the Piliated Woodpeckers, however I would like them to go to the suet rather than the bugs in the trees. Enjoy the snow. #piliatedwoodpecker
You can easily identify the sex of a Piliated by the color stripe or "mustache" they wear. In this photo, the identifying stripe is red--identifying this bird as male. If the stripe had been gray or black, then a female.
Piliated Woodpecker's are easily recognized by their flaming red head and overall size.
Piliated woodpeckers are monogamous and work together to protect their territory.
A Piliated Woodpecker's tongue wraps around the inside of their head, to act like a helmet, protecting their brain from the constant drumming/drilling they ensue in search for Carpenter Ants and other insects.
Keeping the woodpecker theme alive and well, I was fortunate to find a Piliated Woodpecker late Friday afternoon, as he drummed ferociously into this decaying tree, looking for Carpenter Ants. #Birding #BirdingOH #Nature #Photography #PiliatedWoodpecker #WildwoodPreserveMetropark
A long twelve-hour drive from NW Ohio to Murrell's Inlet, SC has left me & hubby a bit spent, so editing photos seems to be the call on this lazy Sunday. Found these Piliated Woodpeckers in late June, while searching for a loud Ovenbird. #Birds #BirdingOH #PiliatedWoodpecker #Nature #Photography
