Top-down shot of an Illinois Everbearing Mulberry tree leafing out.

Every time that I think I don’t have room for one more fruit tree/shrub…I’m wrong. Picked up an Illinois Everbearing Mulberry recently. Started leafing out beautifully just two days after I planted it in not-so-optimal clay soil. #PlantOnceEatForever #FoodForest #Permaculture #PermacultureGardening

Florets of Turkish Rocket (Bunias orientalis) cohabitating with Stinging Nettle. Sauté them up like a broccoli rabe/rapini (their boring domesticated cousin) or let them flower to nourish the pollinators and other beneficial insects. #PlantOnceEatForever #FoodForest #EdiblePerennials

Plant it once and eat it for decades. Its deep roots will mine for minerals and nutrients and allow it to thrive even in drought conditions. A great plant to grow for climate resiliency and food security. #PlantOnceEatForever #PrepperFood #CollapseAware #FoodForest #ForestGarden

Good King Henry was cultivated for centuries in English cottage gardens as a perennial vegetable, then brought to America where it escaped the garden and now grows wild. A source of nutritious greens year after year, requiring almost zero care. #PlantOnceEatForever #FoodForest

An etreme close-up of young Red-veined Sorrel (Rumex sanguineu) plants growing up out of leafy mulch.

It’s a rainy day here in CNY and I’m scrolling through this week’s plant picts trying not to feel guilty for not being outside planting. This edible perennial is Red-veined Sorrel (also known as Bloody Dock). #RumexSanguineus #PlantOnceEatForever #PermacultureGardening #ForestGarden #FoodForest

Fiddleheads are the edible perennial young shoots of the ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris).

Not all fern species are edible so make 100% sure you’re dealing with an ostrich fern before you forage. #PlantOnceEatForever #FiddleheadFerns #WildFood #PermacultureGardening #ForestGarden

Garden Sorrel (Rumex acetosa). A herbaceous perennial with a tangy, sour-lemony flavor (sometimes called Sour Dock or Sheep Sorrel). Available at the salad bar right in your own backyard. #PlantOnceEatForever #PermacultureGardening #ForestGarden #SheepSorrel #SourDock #EdibleLandscaping

Plant once and eat forever. BONUS: It’s native, and it doesn’t mind a little shade. These were winter-sowed in late February. They're just sitting outside with a humidity dome. #PlantOnceEatForever #RudbeckiaLaciniata #PermacultureGardening #ForestGarden #Sochan #PrepperFood

Shot of my little Lovage patch in the early morning light.

Lovage patch is waking up! (Yep, I’m that plant nerd with a label maker.) These plants will end up being 7’ feet tall and provide more celery substitute than can possibly be consumed in a single season. celery! #PlantOnceEatForever #PermacultureGardening #ForestGarden #permaculture #FoodForest

This post probably appeals to like two people, but if you’re a closet prepper who likes to eat fresh wild food in the middle of a brutal winter it was a fun and worthwhile experiment. #JerusalemArtichoke #PrepperFood #HelianthusTuberosus #sunchokes #degrowth #plantonceeatforever #foodforest

Frosty! Last of the 1st-year Stinging Nettle patch. Next year they’ll grow tall and won’t be good this late into the season. This patch will get wilted into to 5 quarts of red lentil stew and tucked into the chest freezer for later this winter. #stingingnettle #eattheweeds #plantonceeatforever
