#PloverWorldCup FINAL:
NORTHERN LAPWING: Familiar on farmland throughout temperate Eurasia. However, its population is decreasing and is #threatened by land-use intensification. Its iridescent green and purple feathers surely make an impressive sight in dense flocks.
#PloverWorldCup FINAL:
PIPING PLOVER: Nests on the Atlantic coast of the U.S. and Canada and on the Great Lakes shores. After a large decrease, the population is now recovering as a result of intensive conservation management. However, numbers are still extremely vulnerable.
#PloverWorldCup FINAL:
ST HELENA PLOVER: Featured on St Helena’s flag, this small plover is the only surviving endemic landbird on the island in the mid-Atlantic. Also known as “wirebird” by the locals, its population may have declined sharply in the 70s.
#PloverWorldCup FINAL:
HOODED PLOVER: The most #threatened beach-nesting bird in Australia. Used to live right up to southern QLD. Now extinct there, it is only found on ocean beaches along southern Australia (including TAS) and also on inland salt lakes in southern WA.
It’s the #PloverWorldCup FINAL!!!
Can’t wait to #PloverAppreciationDay and find out which one of these four #plovers will be the Plover of the Year!!! Only 36 hrs more!

#PloverWorldCup EURASIA:
NORTHERN LAPWING: Common farmland plover throughout temperate Eurasia, however it is threatened by land-use intensification and changes in agricultural practices. Most populations are migratory, with important stop-over habitats on the Baltic Sea coast.
#PloverWorldCup EURASIA:
JAVAN PLOVER: Small plover endemic to Indonesia and found also in Timor-Este. It has range where critical breeding habitats are very threatened by development and recreation. Lives on sandy beaches, mudflats and open areas around coasts.
#PloverWorldCup EURASIA:
SOCIABLE LAPWING: This #CriticallyEndangered lapwing breeds in restricted areas of Kazakhstan and south-central Russia. Key wintering sites in Israel, Eritrea, Sudan and NW India. Rapid decline since the 30s probably due to illegal hunting .
#PloverWorldCup EURASIA:
KENTISH PLOVER: Plover with a very wide distribution from southern Europe to Japan and northern Africa. Some populations are sedentary, but most inland and northern populations are migratory.Considered Least Concern, but overall population decreasing.

#PloverWorldCup AMERICA:

SAINT HELENA PLOVER: This small plover is the only surviving endemic landbird on the island of St Helena in the mid-Atlantic. Locally known as the “wirebird” because of its thin legs. Considered Vulnerable, population numbers may have declined sharply in the 70s.
#PloverWorldCup AFRICA:
MADAGASCAR PLOVER: Small plover native to western Madagascar that lives in the shores of lagoons and breeds in salt marshes. It’s a habitat specialist that seems to be declining due to habitat loss and degradation.
#PloverWorldCup AFRICA:
AFRICAN WATTLED LAPWING: Large and widespread resident breeder of lowland wet habitats in sub-Saharan Africa. Unmistakable: bright white forehead, yellow legs and beak and the obvious yellow wattle on the face.
#PloverWorldCup AFRICA:
WHITE-FRONTED PLOVER: Endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, common along the coasts of southern Africa, riverbanks and inland salt pans. It’s considered Least Concern, but population in Western Cape has dropped ~40% over the last 30 years.
