Today’s poet is 北斎葛飾 Hokusai Katsushika—yes, that Hokusai! Creator of The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.

I made the third panel of my comic for his death poem an homage to his The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.

A haiku comic illustrating the haiku translated from Japanese, "petals fall / on a half-eaten / dumpling", with three panels showing an upward shot of cherry blossoms, close-up of petals falling around a tree trunk, and a close-up of partially eaten dango with petals falling on them.

You know something's up when someone doesn't finish eating their dumplings.

This is the fourth in a series of comics I'm doing of early modern Japanese death haiku. See the link below to learn more!

A haiku comic illustrating the Japanese poet Chine's jisei or death poem/farewell to life. The translation reads: "They light up, and then / they extinguish, just like that / don't they, fireflies..."
The panels show a firefly lighting and then disappearing, followed by a young woman who may be sleeping and another women sitting with her back to the viewer, speaking the lines from the haiku. The final panel shows the young women from the opposite angle, showing us that the seated young woman is a ghost, implying that the sleeping woman has died.

3. A #comic for Chine's death poem (jisei), and it's about #fireflies

In it, she compares the ephemerality of fireflies' light to our own fleeting lives.
