Summer is like the flaming star,

Summer is the flaming star,
      in a pinkening purple-orange sky,
daylight on daylight, hazy heated highs,
as clouds, silver clouds, thin with our worries to
firefly light.

Crazed —
not broken, just
cracked enough

for the pressure
to speak.

Shelter

Sometimes it is only
a doorway you did not notice before—
paint peeling, hinge complaining,
a narrow slice of dim light
that promises nothing.

You step inside anyway.

Outside, the sky is breaking itself apart,
rain coming sideways

the frost that answers nothing
by: chandra jordan

because it is almost morning and the heat has not yet chosen a side
because the coffee tastes like something burned on purpose
because the sink is full of last night’s confessions

because the dog will not look at me when I say your name
because the phone screen glows like a small, private moon
because I keep turning it face down as if that matters

because the house remembers the shape of your boots by the door
because the dust keeps settling where your hands once were
because the mirror refuses to blur my outline

because the whiskey is cheaper than honesty
because I said I was done and meant only for an hour
because silence has a pulse and I press my ear to it

because something small out there keeps trying to live
because I do not know how to help it

because I have rehearsed leaving more than I have left
because the truck starts on the second try
because I wait for a sign and call it weather

because there is always a reason that sounds like mercy
because there is always a reason that sounds like love

THE FIGURES THE WATER REMEMBERS
— a woman’s version of living

They look like many figures.
They are one life, revised again and again.

A meditation on what women carry,
and how that carrying continues.

Gaining your affection
is like chasing butterflies
Somehow I can’t get the right traction
It’s like something around my feet
is tied
And I can never jump high enough
to reach where you would give me
your love

And if I still cannot make you sway
after a lifetime, I will sleep,
I’ll dream these superstitions away
Black cats aren’t ill luck, they just
go deep
And for a token of you, a gaze, a kiss,
I will summon for you, the ghosts
that you miss

Oh, it’s that day of the year.
I spent it deep in the snowy, sun-filtered woods ❄️

Home for some word smithery.

CARTILAGE CONSTELLATIONS
— a maternal cosmology of aftermath

For my mother… where grief acquires syntax, absence glows, and the body learns to carry galaxies instead of ghosts.

VERNALUX
—where winter mislays its crown

Moonlight scripts pale sigils across the river’s obsidian spine
I cup the cold like canon, until its vowels thaw into mercy
Under stone, spring conspires—teaching frost the syntax of bloom

THE ETIQUETTE OF SURVIVAL
— when restraint becomes a form of courage

When the mind screamed its unsayable truths,
I answered with a #silentsurrender
not collapse,
but consent to breathe,
to endure,
to remain.

Nocturne 83
By Dawn McLachlan

Fast on slick black roads
In a night that tasted
Like lip gloss and bravery
Don't let go
Lean into the electric night
Heartbeat like the static
Of the tuneless radio
Sodium light pulse
Tearing out sleeping streets
Into the endless deep blue Whipping stars in branches
Above the hollow ways
And the sweet cool wind
Like a baptism

At the river’s bend, “faces of water turning into themselves”
practice anonymity.
Above it all, lengthening light confesses—
“the shadows carry the whole story.”

What remained after belief was not certainty,
but staying.
Writing this as an act of witness, not resolution.

THE STAIN THEY COULDN’T CLEAN

Joy isn’t light here.
It’s what refuses erasure.

A garnet-cut piece for Voices in Stone—
joy as defiance, residue, forbidden shine.

A poem: The Pet House

The dog goes moo!
The cow goes quack!
They all swapped voices,
There’s no turning back…
The duck goes roar!
The horses go woof!
Sadly looking down,
At their muddy little hooves.

My 8yo wrote a brilliant poem using #JosephCoelho’s #PoetryPrompts book. I wanted to share it with the world! Bit of a Julia Donaldson vibe to it 🥰

The King raised a goblet
To all in his land
For good health and happiness
He lofted his hand.

But Gremlins, you see
Are a race, scropholitic
And upon the King’s word
They all felt terrific.

Their warts were smoothed out
Their skin a nice hue
Their bodies less crooked
And their hair grew back too.

So thanks to that gesture
In a land far away
Are some damn hunky Gremlins
That you might meet some day.

The Light Hangs Low

It swung back and forth like a pendulum,
its cord too long.
The electrician wanted to leave
as quickly as he could.
You had bought a job lot of coloured bulbs,
a different colour for each room.
It was clearly a bad idea,
but I was seven,
I didn’t know how to tell you yet.
When you realised, you pulled them down.
We lit candles for a week
until the council sent someone.
You were in crisis by then.
I didn’t know.
I didn’t have the words.
I just knew the fun, spontaneous mum
came at a cost.
I had my bag packed
when the police woke me at 3 a.m.
You were wrapped in blankets
as they loaded you into the ambulance,
the neighbours watching on.
You smelt like whisky and blood.
I could wait in the station
until they found somewhere for me.

finding what the dark forgot.
Breath meets breath,
a quiet recognition.
Nothing claimed,
yet everything remains.
the space between us still learning warmth.
