                                                        hiding everything beyond
                                                                the churchyard wall,
                                               and curls around the tower
                                         where jackdaws huddle
                                                    in the limestone tracery.

                                                                      before the morning’s out
the sky is clear again — deep blue
                                                                           and cloudless. wood smoke
                                                                                    scents the chill
                                                                                          December air.
outside the church
the winter sunshine fails to warm
                                            the vicar in his cassock,
                                                      cotta, and black mask.
the wind tugs at his vestments
                                      as he greets parishioners
six feet apart, their voices, raised but muffled,
                                                   batted back and forth
                                                             in short-lived clouds
                                                                      of warm,
                                                              inconsequential breath.

                                                      the bleak arises
                                    grey-eyed, sleepy, slow, it slinks

Grown perfectly numbered
in naturally wild frames
Inclined fields of gold trumpets
with wide petal manes
Climbing & rolling

Beneath the bluest skies

At the shore where twilight softly glows,
We trace our laughter in the sand below.
The waves hum gently to the fading light,
Two hearts playing in the gold of night.

Our laughter danced in fading light of day,
Reflections held the love we used to know,

   in dust and heat
the opening looked dark and cool
         inviting me to enter
so I did I fled the harshness
                                       of the sunlight
found that I was not alone
but shared my shelter with the living
                                                                             and the dead

a little group of men and women
 stood and looked about them
           urgently elatedly
        while on a simple shelf
carved from the rock a corpse was laid
                                                                wound tight in cerecloth
                                                                       stained in places
                                                                      from a scattering of wounds
                                                                                    no longer noisome —
dried out in the arid air

I asked the searchers:
what is it you seek? we left our murdered friend
                                                                          and teacher here
they answered me but when we came
                                                                       the stone was rolled aside
                                                                                  the body gone

I looked from them to where the body lay in sere serenity
    and back to them
but I could see their gaze glide over it
as though the winding cloth were left
                                                                               untenanted
and so I held my peace

I detailed, realistic black and white rendering of the full moon superimposed over a pink oval. Text reads: Every time I hear Pink Moon I think of her. San Francisco to Seattle. The red sands of Shasta. The moon over Crater Lake. She wanted to stop and see. We didn't. She wanted to stay in Portland. We didn't. We drove so hard. It went bad. I had to get home for some reason

Urgency without clarity. Ignoring what matters in real time. Without knowing why. And only recognizing it later through a song.
Zen is the unnoticed part of ordinary experience.

Beneath the silver glow of the moon’s soft light,
Our dreams of love take wing into the night.
Whispers of hope drift through skies above,
Guided by moonbeams, we learn to love.

A screenshot of a notes app notes, which reads:
30 Days Of Sonnets: Day 4
I miss long summers underneath the trees:
The bluebells carpeting the ground, the hush
Beneath the canopy, the whispering breeze
That rustles through the creeping underbrush.
The shade is cool and soothing on my skin,
Baked underneath the blazing midday sun,
As the first maple seeds tumble and spin
Towards the earth below. My fingers run
Along the flaking bark and papery leaves
As I breathe in the heavy-scented dirt,
'Til evening draws me home, and my heart greaves
To leave behind this haven and revert
Back to my mundane life boxed in by walls
So seldom breeched by nature's joyous calls.

The body is discovered,
limp and bloody ball of ragged feathers,
              red breast dulled, claw torn.

Rooks are sent to carry out
a beak-tip search of nearby fields,
              but nothing’s found.

There are no suspects

       there are no clues

              there’s no direction

                               only talk
