#Pohoiki Boat Ramp Dredge, A Time-lapse of All Work Days (Updated through end of Dredge)

Filmed from June 9 to October 13, 2025, captures all the work on the Pohoiki boat ramp dredge following the early June blessing that marked the start of construction.

This new black sand beach resulted from the volcanic eruption in the East Rift Zone in 2018. This changed many features on the Puna coast, including Pohoiki and Isaac Hale Beach Park, a popular surfing destination, for which it is no longer desirable. It is nonetheless, perfectly suitable for walking, and provides a glimpse into recent volcanic geological evolution. Describing this as a black “sand” beach is generous. It will eventually become sand, but only after the pounding surf reduces the size of the rugged pieces of lava over the period of several years. This is not a particularly safe location to play in the water.
