Promotion is not decoration – Shikongo
LIEUTENANT General Joseph Shikongo, inspector general of the Namibian Police, held an engagement meeting with police officers from the Oshikoto region where addressed key issues including unprofessionalism, accommodation, promotions and the stress and financial management of officers.
During his visits to the Oshana, Ohangwena, and Oshikoto regions, Shikongo announced the promotion of over sixty officers, with a special focus on senior personnel. He emphasised that promotions are crucial for improving officers’ lives but cautioned against viewing them merely as decorations.
“Promotions are not a decoration but a responsibility,” Shikongo stated. He urged officers to refrain from making unfounded accusations about promotions, particularly claims suggesting that sexual favors influence career advancements. “Let’s congratulate others when they are promoted,” he added.
Speaking on unprofessionalism, Shikongo criticised officers who turn away individuals seeking help due to a lack of transport. “I am tired of hearing reports of people being turned away because there is no transport. This must end,” he asserted, noting that such behavior undermines the police’s mandate.
He also pointed out the unprofessionalism of officers modifying their uniforms or chewing gum while in uniform. “How do you modify your uniform to a slim fit?” he challenged. Shikongo announced that he would send a letter to all fourteen regions addressing these issues.
He expressed a desire for total professionalism within the police organisation and mentioned that significant amendments to policing manuals are forthcoming. “We have to move with the world. Some manuals used in the force must be updated to reflect today’s policing environment,” he stated.
Shikongo concluded by saying that the police organisation is actively working to address issues related to mobility and accommodation for officers, aiming to foster a more effective and professional police service.
