UP THE STEPS I didn’t know what fornication was but it had to be bad if Father Screamer was so adamant about calling it out in his 6 a.m. homilies to the staruszki who trudged to St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church every morning in their sandpaper stockings and clodhoppers. (Actually it was Monsignor Screamer, but I didn’t know what that meant either.) It was no Sistine Chapel but God was there on the wall painted into a throne of clouds lined with gold leaf beside the Black Madonna. A heavenly tenor lived in the choir loft gracing every mass with earnest hymns. Idyllic as the unscratched surface seemed to be we left that parish when my sisters said the nuns brandished rulers in class. They may have been angels, left unharmed, but I would have been crucified if only for being born a left-handed black sheep. Over the years, I mainly returned for CYO games, weddings, and funerals. When my grandfather, Adam, passed, one of my uncles had to corral an altar boy to whisper to the drunk priest to stop calling him George in the rambling eulogy. The saddest frozen winter morning my cousins and I bore my grandmother up the icy steps to the vestibule, stone-faced until one of us wondered out loud how the little matriarch was doing, jostled and tilted at forty five degrees in the casket. After mass, as we headed back to the stairs the priest pointed to the elevator and we were like, doh, what a kick in the pants.
