Very good news from Tanzania today, as the Ministry declares the end of the latest Marburg outbreak.

This is the result of hard work and collaboration between partners including Gov't of Tanzania, AfricaCDC, @who.int , @unicef.org, @ifrc.org and the US CDC.

An unknown illness kills over 50 people in part of Congo with hours between symptoms and death An unknown illness has killed over 50 people in northwestern Congo. That's according to doctors on the ground and the World Health Organization on Monday.

According to the AP, local and WHO reports say 419 cases, and 50 deaths within 48 hours in an as-yet undiagnosed outbreak in NW DRC, ongoing since January 21. Tests for Ebola and Marburg are negative; with some positive for malaria.

Last week, @who.int reported suspected cases of Marburg in Tanzania and alerted Member States through the IHR system. The Tanzanian gov't then reported 4 tested cases were negative.

The genotype of #H5N1 that led to the death of a 65+ yr. old man is the same as that which, separately, caused severe illness in a 13 yr-old in BC.

As long as #H5N1 circulates in birds and mammals, there is continued risk of a mutation that could lead to h-to-h transmission.
