Never mind trying to break it down into singular base pieces without any overlap. Lust is no less human than compassion. It is no less situational and complex than hope. There is no way to fully excise it from love, from jealously, from possessiveness, from fear, from joy, from drive, from pride, anger, sorrow or grief! Not without taking away important pieces of those emotions at the same time. It’s not just one another we lust for, but also for life! A powerful, driving desire to live! To experience! To connect! To know and understand with a depth and clarity that's oftentimes terrifying. Lust drives the need to learn. It takes us from a place of scrawling droning facts and memorization listlessly, to a beast devouring pages and pages of obscure articles and texts only to divine one more precious mote of knowing. To shape another piece of an endless puzzle. There is no passion without lust! There is no depth to be etched into the lines of hope and loss and love and victory without lust!
Do not come to me and say that lust is a sin, or that there is no merit in its exploration. Don’t insult me by demanding I rip it apart from my creativity, from my imagination, as if I could tear a piece of my own soul from my flesh and set it on a tray. Don’t insult the complexity of humanity and existence by waving away any driving force of it. You cannot remove anger from art, or sorrow, or joy, or pain, and still expect to find humanity within it. You mistake comfort and call it purity. You mislabel your discomfort as dirt and look to rend your own flesh and bones. Perfection is as impossible as Utopia, and it is only the villain that demands you reach for it. It's only the one who doesn't want you to look too closely at what they're taking from you that tempts you with a perfect world. Only if you can be perfect for it.
Take your purity and shove it. It cannot exist without drawing lines in the sand between groups of people. It cannot exist without Othering everyone who refuses to harm themselves in order to fit a mold that has neither meaning nor value. Sex is not some lesser, dirty thing. When you treat it thus you make it more difficult to talk about it, which makes it more difficult to educate people about, which makes it more difficult for people to protect themselves, which makes it easier for villains to be successful. The same can be said for anger, shame, or anything else that brings you discomfort so much you cry for it to be banned. Demand it be censored. Bully those who speak on it, about it, or through it for any reason without care, concern or understanding on your part.
I do not strive to be pure, or perfect. I barely even mean to be human. I mean to be me. And I can only hope that if that result is something alien, I can still find warmth among those that consider themselves human.
