Cooperative or collaborative environment?
The difference is the difference.
No easy road to better.
#Project180
Smoke and mirrors.
The data game.
And we know it.
But what we know is not always what we admit .
We can do better.
Honestly.
#Project180
“We have better problems.”
The evolution from the revolution of the feedback cycle.
Better problems.
How I try to frame the messy magic of making mistakes for my kids as we learn forward with feedback.
#Project180
If we really knew what we were doing with education, we probably wouldn’t be doing what we are doing with education.
We can do better.
#Project180
Humbly, I offer better.

“Teaching and Learning Check” (TLC)
My new name for assessments.
I’ve used “Learning Check” for years.
Why the change?
Just the next stage of my ever-evolving efforts to frame for my kids the idea that it’s OUR (teachers’ and learners’) work.
Frames matter.
#Project180
Wonder how the world might react if they truly knew how much of education is simply making it up as we go.
Only thing worse might be discovering how many in education would deny and defend (status quo).
We can do better.
We know it.
And so must the world.
#Project180
MAGA kid talks with LGBTQ kid.
Measure of a healthy classroom community.
So much we could learn from kids, and so much we shouldn’t teach them.
Connection, not division.
We (adults) can do better.
#Project180
“Sy, do you think a grade really shows a person’s intelligence.”
“No, I don’t. I really don’t.”
The constant reckoning of reality for teachers.
We can do better.
#Project180
They’re not dumb.
They just don’t play school.
So what do we do?
The only thing we know how to do.
Play school even harder.
And they get even dumber.
We can do better.
#Project180
When we finally realize the rubric doesn’t need 4 columns, it needs 150 columns.
Then the teaching (and learning) begins.
No all without each.
We can do better.
#Project180
Yes, we should check our sources.
But, we should also check ourselves.
Why we post is as important as what we post.
Ask yourself.
Why am I posting this?
Be the guard at your gate.
Better begins within.
#Project180
If only “owning” the opposition was the flex people thought.
Try working with the opposition.
That’s a flex.
Because it’s worth everyone’s while.
Nothing easy, ever.
We can all work harder to make things better, not worse.
#Project180
But first not to gaslight ourselves.
We can do better.
#Project180
“Don’t trust the media.”
We are the media.
We can all do better.
#Project180
“But who will guard the guards?” -Juvenal, Satire VI, circa 1 AD/CE
Then.
As now.
As ever.
It’s a matter of guarding ourselves.
We (all) can do better.
#Project180
Okay, fine, data matters.
But not nearly as much as we pretend.
Data’s not the problem.
It’s the pretending.
We can do better.
#Project180
“I’m just seeking to understand.”
Seeking to understand isn’t seeking to understand if one’s mindset is fixed.
Closed minds seek little and understand even less.
Open minds. Open dialogue. Open doors.
We can do better.
#Project180
Better as a way of being, in the classroom, in life.
Do. Reflect. Do Better.

Presence of mind.
Not presents of mind.
For those who “gift” their divisive opinions to the world.
We can all do better.
#Project180
Teaching is subject to the teacher.
Learning is subject to the learner.
Grading is, then, subject to the teaching and the learning.
Put that in your rubric.
We can do better.
#Project180
Just a teacher chasing better.
Do. Reflect. Do Better.

Maybe my “better” will help your better.
Do. Reflect. Do Better.

As a teacher, I often find myself thinking, ya can’t make this shit up.
And then I remember, it’s all made up.
And if we’ve made it up, we can make it better.
We can do better.
#Project180
It’s not working.
There.
There’s our data.
Now let’s effin do something.
We can (we must) do better.
#Project180
They say write what you know.
All I know is that there’s always better.
So, better’s what I wrote.
Do. Reflect. Do Better.

If they valued learning, we wouldn’t need grading.
So how do we help them value learning?
Get rid of grading.
“Well, we can’t.”
Yes, that’s the problem.
Can’t is our keeper.
But,
We CAN.
Do better.
#Project180
Retakes, redos, revisions.
Objective right or subjective privilege?
Our answer reveals much.
Maybe everything.
We can do better.
#Project180
Maybe they need time.
You know, that same time teachers demand when we’re learning a new program, system, etc.
Learning takes time.
At any age.
We can do better.
#Project180
I’ve come to suspect that those who need “proof of learning” don’t really understand learning.
We can do better.
