v.4 “And the Lord shall also do unto them as He did to Sihon, Og...and unto the land, He destroyed”: Here, Moses reminds them of past victories that God gave them over great and powerful kings. Past testimonies of victories or breakthroughs are meant to strengthen our faith for new battles. v.5 “The Lord shall give them up before your face”: This is guaranteed victory before they even took a step towards the Promised Land. Of course, victories, breakthroughs or set times come with responsibility to obey God’s instructions concerning handling the wealth and the people of the land.
v.6 “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not nor be afraid of them”: The Lord is telling the people this because He, the Lord, will go with them. Go in the power of His might. He will not fail or disappoint you. Yes, brethren, God is the only being that will send you on an errand and goes ahead of you to set you up for success or victory. In other words, He goes ahead of you and simultaneously goes with you on that errand to make sure that you are totally victorious.
v.7 “Moses called unto Joshua...in the sight of all Israel”: Moses publicly announces and affirms his successor Joshua in the sight of all Israel. Mind you, Moses had sons, but he did not choose any of them, and Moses did not try to force his sons upon the people. That is quite unlike today’s ministry business. Pastors are forcing their unqualified son or daughter upon the people.
v.8 “And the Lord, He it is that doth go before thee”: This is the main subject of our sermon today. Here in this verse, what an awesome reassurance that God Himself will go ahead or before the people. This double blessed assurance is to boost the people’s confidence and faith in order to dash all fear to pieces. It was to dissolve any doubt in the people’s mind. However, the truth of the matter is that before you can solve any problem, you must first identify the problem, find out the cause, know its danger, and then attack the problem - solution.

Synopsis of Deuteronomy 31:1-8. This is presumably Moses’ last counsel and farewell speech to the children of Israel with particular attention to the priests, Levites, and Joshua. As the children of Israel were about to cross over into the Promised Land, Moses exhorted or encouraged them not to be afraid, for God’s presence is with them, and most importantly, that God has gone ahead of them to grant them victory over Jericho. v.1 “And Moses went and spake these words to Israel”: Moses was addressing the entire nation of Israel, including the priests, Levites, and young Joshua. This speech was important for everyone to hear. It is the same today, as every preached word or instruction from the Lord is for all.
v.2a “I am an hundred and twenty this day”: Moses acknowledges his age v.2b “I can no more go out and come in”: He also acknowledges his physical limitations v.2c “The Lord hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan”: The Lord had already told him in Numbers 20:12 that he could not enter into the Promised Land because of his disobedience of striking the rock. v.3 Here in this passage, Joshua is confirmed as the appointed leader to bring the people into the Promised Land. But, God Himself would be the ultimate leader to conquer Jericho. So, it was not going to be by their power nor by their might, but by God’s own Spirit that Jericho would fall.
