#ASCLmembers: Pepe Di’Iasio is at Westminster for today's video briefing, with updates on today's good news from the government that they have agreed to pause the defunding of Applied General Qualifications (AGQs): https://vimeo.com/1172186248?fl=tl&fe=ec

News from our conference this week! Our CEO Bill Watkin explained: “In the autumn, the #ProtectStudentChoice campaign shared compelling evidence with the DfE to support a pause... since then, we have welcomed the opportunity to engage in constructive bilateral discussions with govt officials."
Delighted to hear from Baroness Smith, our minister, on govt's plans to make sure young people get the skills they need for HE and good work. On the pace of de-funding and V level rollout, she hears the need to #protectstudentchoice and has 'no intention' of leaving young people without options.
Today's video briefing comes from #SLSConference, where @pepediiasio.bsky.social is joined by @tom-campbell.bsky.social to discuss attendance targets, plus @thenfer.bsky.social report on #SEND equity, 16-18 results, and #ProtectStudentChoice campaign survey on defunding: vimeo.com/1136888152?f...
We welcome that the Committee understands the need to retain AGQs alongside A levels and T levels, ensuring students have a range of pathways to work and further study, with the flexibility to choose the best route for them.

A post-16 system that maintains breadth of choice is the best way for @departmentforedu.bsky.social to meet our future skills needs.
Let’s protect what works while we build what’s new.

Many of the most subscribed BTECs are in these sectors (see pic).
With T-levels & AAQs not yet seeing the same uptake, maintaining AGQs is a sensible move.
Let’s not risk losing valuable routes for young people. 🚏

Alongside this, a further pause in defunding Level 3 Applied General Qualifications (AGQs) is surely the best way forward - especially with slow AAQ and T-level uptake.
We must keep all pathways open into priority skills areas. 📈
#FE #skills #ProtectStudentChoice 3/7
This should increase confidence in AAQs moving forward, helping us continue to #ProtectStudentChoice and support a diverse post-16 landscape. 🌱

ASCL strongly urges the government to retain these popular and valued applied general qualifications. We support #Tlevels, but do not understand why this must be at the expense of other tried and trusted vocational qualifications which work well for many students.

As part of the #ProtectStudentChoice campaign, the Sixth Form College Association, ASCL and other campaign partners have written to Professor Francis this week to say it is possible for AGQs and T levels to co-exist, and it is essential for social mobility and growth that they do so.
It's good to see recognition that students should be able to choose from a range of qualifications - not just A levels and T levels. This is a win for the #ProtectStudentChoice campaign

It's welcome news that most post-16 qualifications which were to be scrapped have been saved. We urge the government to retain the others and #ProtectStudentChoice

This is very good news indeed. #ProtectStudentChoice
There’s been
ups (pre-election pause and review promise),
downs (previous ministers digging their heels in)
and the frankly bizarre (Gordon Brown)
but all this could come to a head next week.
Here’s MPs’ last ditch plea to save BTECs and #ProtectStudentChoice
