Simulations Reveal How Craters Could Reveal the Interior of Asteroid Psyche Asteroid 16 Psyche, a metal-rich object located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, has puzzled scientists for over two centuries. At roughly 140 miles in diameter, Psyche is the largest known metal asteroid and may hold clues to the early formation of planets in our Solar System. Researchers from the University of Arizona have simulated the formation of a massive crater near Psyche’s north pole to better understand the asteroid's internal structure. Their simulations examined two scenarios: one where Psyche has a layered interior with a metallic core and thin rocky mantle, possibly resulting from a catastrophic collision, and another where it consists of a mixed metal-and-rock composition formed by repeated impacts. A key finding is the role of porosity, or the internal empty spaces, in shaping crater formation and debris distribution. Higher porosity allows the asteroid to absorb impact energy, producing deeper craters with less scattered debris. These simulations provide testable predictions for NASA's Psyche spacecraft, scheduled to arrive in 2029, which will measure surface composition, gravity, and magnetic fields.
