Testing out some Kriegsspiel blocks with my Pub Battles maps/scenarios. The smaller blocks work a lot better.

Lots of hobby stuff this week. Restarted 4 year old D&D campaign, played a few refresher games of Stars of Akarios, and worked on box control for Ancient Pub Battles and Littoral Commander.

Battle blocks and battlefield with no terrain. Right flank was devastated by rampaging elephants which is why it is so empty.

Played my first learning game of Ancient Pub Battles. The battle system worked better than expected with multiple commanders being able to each activate the same units and cav getting to charge over and over again as long as they aren’t disrupted.

Replaying the battle of Brandywine again but this time at Brigade scale. I tried doing the direct assault across the river instead of the historical flanking maneuver and it failed as expected. I’m looking forward to trying Germantown at this scale…

Replaying the battle of Monmouth for the 4th of July. Neither side achieved their primary objective but the colonials achieved a minor victory… they were forced to give up the high ground at Kerr farm but they held the forested road to the north.

I’m rewatching the show…Turn:Washington’s Spies for the 4th of July week and really enjoyed these shots of military planning. It made me realize what a good job #PubBattles does at capturing the period feel of the games maps and components.

Trying something different with #PubBattles tonight. Using the blocks for fog of war but once the units have been spotted I swap them out for 6mm miniatures.

Historical map with no gamey elements. The game just uses a few colored wooden blocks… no tokens needed to mark status or state. Blocks are rotated face up if disordered.

A single hit disorders a unit. The second makes it retreat. The third destroys it… very simple.

I’ve been looking at a bunch of different ‘rank and flank’ miniature rule systems lately but in the end I decided to just play Pub Battles tonight instead. I love the look of the blocks on the historical maps and how quickly it plays.
