🌍🌏 Eurasian bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula) The Eurasian bullfinch is a stocky bull-headed finch. Males boast a striking bright pinkish-red breast and cheeks, contrasting with a black cap, grey back, and black wings and tail, offset by a prominent white rump. Females are duller, with a grey-pink breast and brown back. They are widely distributed across Europe and temperate Asia, favouring woodlands, hedgerows, and gardens with dense cover. While generally resident, northern populations may migrate south in winter. Often shy and elusive, their presence is frequently betrayed by their soft, melancholic "peu" whistle. They feed primarily on seeds and buds, particularly fruit tree buds in spring, and are often seen in pairs or small family groups. They form monogamous pair bonds, often lasting for multiple years.
