The Ministère de la Justice is gathering input from the Québec population about the daylight savings time change. The utility of the time change has been taken into question by recent studies showing its impact on our health, economy, and daily lives. This survey will help us assess whether to retain or abandon the practice.

Current situation

Let us remember that in most of Quebec, the legal time is Eastern Standard Time (winter time). Every year, on the second Sunday in March, we move the clocks forward to switch to Daylight Saving Time (UTC - 4 hours). Then, on the first Sunday in November, we move the clocks back to return to Standard Time, winter time (UTC - 5 hours).

As for the Maritime Community of the Magdalen Islands and the Listuguj First Nation Reserve, they follow Atlantic Standard Time…

The Quebec government says it wants to hear from Quebecers about the possibility of scrapping the twice-yearly time change. 

Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette says the time change has a number of negative health effects, especially on children and teenagers. 

The minister is announcing a public consultation that will last until Dec. 1, and says the government could then table legislation to abolish the practice, but he didn’t say whether the province would prefer to scrap daylight time or make it permanent.
