Looking down from the top of the Initiation Well on the grounds of the Quinta Da Regaleira (Regaleira Farm) in Sintra, Portugal. A circular stairwell in an alcove surrounds a central shaft leading down to the bottom. What is an Initiation Well you ask? According to the story we were told, it was used in Masonic rituals to initiate new members into the next level of status/membership/whatever. Whether that's true or not, I have no idea. The entire grounds of this place is covered in weird structures, caves etc. It has Disneyland vibe to it - like an alternate or enhanced or caricaturized version of history. Mostly it feels like a place built for tourists. I could be wrong, and maybe it all served some actual purpose, but it certainly didn't feel like it to me. If you think you saw me post this previously, you're right. I hadn't been including alt-text then, and I feel like I should, so some pics will be reposted. Most won't be this longwinded.
