BlueSky is up just in time for me to get this in before Friday. The Pietà at the Vatican. It was packed, this camera was manual focus and I had to hold it over my head to see past the crowd. Frankly it's amazing it's in frame.

For Sabine and Anna's (@sabineshutterbug.bsky.social / @annalois36.bsky.social) #PalacesAndGardens theme of #outtakes I've got a shot of the little known Indian Peahen shape shifter. Native to the Marley Park Walled Gardens here in Dublin. 😊

The idea was simple: lens to keyhole, a perfectly framed glimpse of the altar inside a former church, secret and intimate. The execution was less so. The camera refused to cooperate with the keyhole's geometry, the lens landing a mile off, and instead of a crisp circular window into the sacred ground interior, the result is a blurry cascade of misalignment, a soft blur of finger in the left of frame, a deep navy-black void where the door itself swallowed the light, and only in the very centre, like a painting glimpsed through a half-open eye, the altar: white cloth, a crucifix, pale blue-lavender apse walls, warm ochre ceiling vault. The church interior, serene and perfectly lit, had no idea it was barely visible. A study in almost.

Good morning friends of

A view of the facade of St. Vitus Cathedral (the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saints Vitus, Wenceslaus and Adalbert), Prague, Czech Republic. There are people in front of the cathedral taking in the scene.
In an attempt to include all of the cathedral in the shot, the perspective is quite disorienting with both the vertical and horizontal elevations not as expected. The building appears to be horizontal with the ground sloping away vertically in front of it.
St. Vitus Cathedral is the largest and most important church in the Czech Republic, known for its French Gothic architecture.
Construction on the cathedral began in 1344 but was not completed until 1929.

I was still learning digital photography and the perils of using a wide angle lens pointed upwards, which makes vertical lines & objects tilt inward toward the center of the image, so aptly demonstrated here with the church tower on the right and the column on the left. Who strung those utility wires across the upper left corner? And what's that thing protruding over the upper right edge of the frame? Who took this picture???? Oh...wait...........

Image of the ceiling and walls of the Hall Of Mirrors at Versailles with ornate paintings on the ceilings, magnificent gold trim around the large arched windows across from the arched mirrors across the hall. Amazing crystal chandeliers hang from the high ceiling. Directly in front of the camera, a person's head seems to be hanging from one of the chandelier lines. One of the drawbacks to being a short person trying to take photos in crowded places.

We arrived in Arashiyama far later than planned, and instead of sunset photos, I ended up with the very last light of twilight. The long exposure did make for an unintentionally ghostly shot of my daughter

I felt these three white, wide open tulip blossoms were staring me in the eye. Then I noticed that the bottom one was being "pushed" by a dandelion flower leaning heavily against one of the tulip petals.
Never expected the mighty tulip to be such a pushover!
This pictures may have ended up in the dustbin of history, hat not Sabine's PalacesAnd Gardens called for #outtakes this week. Therefore, her it is that oh so funny photograph.

Our shows a wooden sailing boat displayed indoors, viewed through a large pane of glass inside a bright, modern museum space.

The boat itself is long and narrow, made of weathered, pale wood with visible grain and small metal fittings along its side.

A thick rope runs along the edge, tied neatly, suggesting its use in rough conditions. The hull curves gently upward, and the boat rests securely on supports just above a smooth, grey floor.

Above the boat, a simple mast rises with a small, off-white sail stretched between spars.

The sail looks slightly worn and utilitarian rather than decorative, more functional than elegant. Hinting at harsh journeys rather than leisure.

The setting is striking: the boat is housed inside a tall glass atrium filled with natural light.

Strong steel beams crisscross diagonally overhead and along the sides, creating a geometric frame around the vessel. Behind the structure, part of an older brick wall with arched windows is visible, blending historic architecture with modern design.

Reflections in the glass add a layered effect. Outside trees, bare branches reaching upward are mirrored across the boat’s surface, along with a vivid blue sky.

These reflections overlap the boat, making it feel as though it exists between indoors and outdoors, past and present.

In the lower left corner, a blurred fingertip is visible, slightly pink and out of focus, suggesting the photo was taken up close against the glass or by a doofus 🙄

Overall, the scene feels calm but powerful: a sturdy, humble boat preserved in a bright, airy space, carrying a quiet sense of endurance and history tied to polar exploration.

And finally, this abomination is finished off with a simple white border frame.
