Photograph taken whilst exploring the gardens of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Quite like the slightly unusual composition and there's more happening than I realised when I took it (because I was being vain and not wearing my glasses).

The image is split vertically in two. On the right is a tree trunk close up, with notches, ridges and holes illuminated by sunshine. The left side is split in two horizontally and everything is in soft focus. The bottom section is a beautiful lake with reflections of the trees, below which is a cream path diagonally down to the corner, bordered by lush green grass. Below this, a grey gravel path edged by rocks and plants angles up from the tree trunk to meet in a point with the cream path. This is quite the description so hope you've not nodded off! The top half is the cream path horizontally borders the lake with tall dark green, almost silhouetted trees beyond. Through these is a lush green hillside then blue sky with white clouds above.

Twisted limbs! This was on a bedroom ceiling at Chatsworth House. Can you imagine trying to sleep under this mass of twisted bodies? Apparently it's called 'Return of the Golden Age'! It was painted by Antonio Verrio who started this in 1691.

Not quite sure how to describe this as there's so much going on, so I'll pick out a couple of figures in detail later on. Image shows a painted ceiling of a writhing mass of almost naked bodies up in the clouds. Some modesty is saved by robes or strips of fabric in reds, deep greens, navy, ochres and whites. The figures are based on myths and legends. For most of the ceiling the figures are fleeing in fear and terror, with only a small area suggesting calm and tranquility.

The bottom section includes figures falling over each other whilst wrestling a deep olive green snake. Below them is a figure in a red cape holding a caber. Apparently this is Fury and stands upon religious and absolutist symbols (if I hadn't cut him off at the knees on my photograph).

In the centre is an old, muscular, winged male wearing a crown and a strip of luxurious navy fabric just about covers his modesty. He is holding a staff in his hand. With an arm around his shoulders, held aloft is a pale female with long golden hair that Rapunzel would be proud of. A swathe of the most flimsy, transparent fabric drapes across her abdomen and she is holding a ball of light in her hand. Apparently she is Cybele who was the 'mother of all gods' and controlled every aspect of life on earth - plants, animals, people, fertility. She protected civilisation apparently by sparing some from natural disasters.

Her power seems to be working as in her wake, the figures are calmly reclined, smiling, having a chat and there's even one hugging a cloud!

Photograph taken of the inner courtyard of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. It's a whopper of a house, owned by the Duke of Devonshire. Although I adore visiting these amazing places, am quite uncomfortable by the lavish wealth some people reside in through an accident of birth. Now I've got that out of the way, onto the photograph!

Image shows a facade of one of the four inner courtyard walls. It was taken from a corridor outside the chapel inside the house. There are three sets of four tall rectangular windows across three storeys. Each window is made of four x seven glass panes with gold edge between each, except the lowest row which is four x six. The top windows have a fancy stone mini balcony, bit like the pointless Juilet balconies on new build apartments, but fancy. The facade is stone and features the usual Italianate features of pediments (like decorative hats), cornice (patterned horizontal stone strips where you'd find a plastic gutter on a terraced house) and beams (flat stone horizontal strips between storeys). All the window frames are gold and shine in the sunshine. There are three long thing stone reliefs between the middle floor windows featuring a tangled mass of faces, plants, drums and other things not clear enough on the image to see. Blue sky overhead and a flat slab stone courtyard floor below.

I could probably write four pages of descriptions but won't bore you further. In summary, it's stone, symmetrical, has fancy twiddles here and there, and big windows in gold frames.

A portrait oriented image taken in a greenhouse in the garden at Chatsworth House last week. It’s a stunning orange flower, I’m not sure what it’s possible an azalea or rhododendron type? The bloom sits in the bottom two thirds and above are architectural branches and leaves of other plants, and a little detail of the glasshouse.

A landscape oriented image of mature rhododendrons in the garden at Chatsworth House. The blooms are various shades of pink and there’s a decent amount of blue in the sky above. One rhododendron stands on the right slightly away from the others. Between them there is a dip in which the blue sky sits. Fallen flowers are scattered on the grass below them.

Photograph taken of the landscape from the outer edges of the gardens at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Pricey to get in but SO worth it if it's financially do-able. Can easily spend a full day exploring the huge house and extensive gardens. Lots to keep kids entertained too, even if mine set off the alarm which brought attendants running 🙈.

Image shows a winding path through steep slopes of green grass, daffodils and deep green tangled hedging. Bit like kids draw hills - one side then the other. Ahead is a small pond in which a boar sculpture stands on a plinth. There's a good reflection of the boar in the water. Beyond this are glimpses of bright green lawn and distant hillsides. Leaning in from the left is a huge winter skeleton tree and some other straighter ones on the right, providing scale to the image. Lots of other trees including evergreens surrounding the pops of green lawn. Overhead is blue sky and sizeable white clouds, also reflected in the pond.

Couldn't resist putting capturing these two sculptures either side of a huge marble fireplace in collage form. It perfectly captures the start and mid/end-point of a costume party.

The left image is of a Bacchanalian groupie, nonchalantly leaning on the mantelpiece whilst showing off his party trick of downing a pint from a drinking horn held aloft. Daft fella's forgotten to open his mouth so may draw a crowd for the wrong reasons. Stripped to the waist and clad in a risky little number (sheep's fleece) he sports a crown of grapes atop his bouncy curls. Nice pair of legs there Kevin...super smooth!

The right image is of our Doris a few drinks in. Actually it's of Hebe, cup bearer to the gods. She's promised to alternate her drinks but the wine tastes like pop so what's the difference? She's also leaning on the fireplace, but perhaps to stay upright rather than look cool. She's clutching her sizeable drinking goblet in one hand - nobody stands a chance of removing that from her grip of steel. Her other hand is holding grapes above her forehead whilst she gently whispers to them 'fill up the goblet you little ruby beauties'. Her curls look magnificent but her outfit hasn't lasted so well, leaving her chest exposed and her robe just about hanging on for dear life around her waist. Good luck with your sore head tomorrow our Doris!

The room is bright red with an enormous heavy gold mirror and white marble sculptures. The left figure is by either Richard Westmacott the younger or Robert William Siever. The right sculpture is by Antonio Canova.

Photograph taken looking up at a classical marble sculpture taken at Chatsworth House.

The image shows a right poser. Apparently it's Apollo, who couldn't decide what to be God of, so covered all bases with music, poetry and the sun! As you do. He's got one arm up behind his head, elongating his torso, whilst holding his lyre (fancy hand held harp) with his free hand. He has a fine head of wavy hair but appears to have been garrotted at some point, then neatly patched up. He's positioned himself in illuminating soft light from the large window behind him, in the corridor outside the door from the chapel. Perhaps he's wanting to entice the ladies away from their psalms. Either way, good luck to you fella!

Photograph taken of an C18th oil painting of a young boy who looks like he's either had an allergic reaction to some face cream or has been on the sunbed a little too long! He's wearing a black outfit with silver braid and a white lace ruff. The frame is a heavy, ornate gold and hangs against a beautiful dull sage green wallpaper of water silk.

Photograph taken from the top of a dramatic staircase, looking up at a domed ceiling with arched windows all the way round. Monochrome filter used, although the colour version is little different.

Image shows a domed ceiling off centre, leaving the top and bottom left corners in black shadow. The centre of the dome looks like a dandelion in bud. Stemming out from that are circular ring containing various symmetrical patterns which eventually split out into triangular points, slotting neatly between the tall arched windows. Each window lets in a lot of gentle sunlight. Below this is another circle in deep shadow, followed by a ring of panelling.

It was a beautiful sight to look up at. Although it is fancy, it was one of the least ornate elements at Chatsworth House.

Photograph taken of a beautiful chestnut horse in the stable at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. Not a fancy racehorse but a raw beauty.

Image shows the side profile of a chestnut-coloured horse asleep against a stable wall of dark coloured stone. The daylight gently illuminates its face.

Was drawn to this horse. Yes it was asleep but it had a really peaceful aura. Went on a lovely horse ride round a turquoise lake in NZ many years ago. Had taken a few months of lessons as an adult so I could get a horse to trot and stop, which made such an experience possible.

A landscape oriented image in which on the right hand side we see a bronze bust of Deborah Devonshire with a backdrop of trees.

Deborah Devonshire who was the youngest of the Mitford sisters, the older ones being known for various exploits some of which scandalised society in the 1940s. Deborah married Andrew Cavendish in 1941, who at the time was the second son of, but his elder brother was killed in the Second World War and so Andrew became heir and eventually he and Deborah became Duke and Duchess of Chatsworth.

Deborah was a very astute businesswomen and takes huge credit for commercial success of Chatsworth today, especially after the huge death duties incurred on the death of her husband’s father that at the time threatened to see it broken up.

A landscape oriented image of sunset in the garden at Chatsworth House. The display greenhouse runs in from the right to just past centre. It a very elaborate greenhouse with what appear to be masts reaching skyward along its length. It houses three zones tropical, Mediterranean and temperate, visitors are not allowed into the tropical as it would have an adverse effect on the temperature. From the bottom left corner a path enters the frame and continues in to run down the side of the greenhouse. On the left we can also see the rose garden and the lovely stone building that sits to the rear of it. Above it all is a sky displaying orange and red clouds of sunset.

A landscape oriented image taken this morning on my iPhone, no doubt more from my big camera will follow at some point. The conditions were lovely, with a fresh layer of snow, my first this winter, covering everything. The river Wye flows into the frame in the bottom right corner, the bank covered with frosted reeds runs into the image on the left. Where the river meets the bank there is a layer of ice, a nice touch as it adds another dimension. Across the river on the mid of the top third we see Chatsworth House looking splendid in the winter sun and reflecting into the river. Across the frame from left to right above it are a line of trees and they are topped with blue sky.

An image taken inside Chatsworth House looking up at a beautiful skylight in the rook. It’s a glass dome surrounded by ornate plaster work. The walls on either side leading up to it are lined with paintings and across the bottom is a gallery on which people are standing admiring their surroundings.
