Good afternoon,
In order to explain my concerns, I would first like to introduce myself. My name is Felix Fern, I am a transgender activist who has collaborated with groups such as Stonewall and Mermaids, I've been cited as an expert in my field in many mainstream media outlets, written for some myself, appeared in several television interviews over topics regarding transgender rights in the UK, and have been celebrated by outlets such as Cosmopolitan for my work.
I am also a fannibal. I attended Red Dragon Con 7 this year, and I had a truly wonderful time. Of course, one of the main highlights of that experience was the guests.
Although I have not yet booked my ticket for Red Dragon Con 8, I was incredibly excited to learn the current lineup of guests, and last night that excitement turned to dread as I learned what one of the guests, Scott Thompson, posted on social media. It has left me feeling uncomfortable with purchasing a ticket for the event.
(There is a screenshot of a tweet made by Scott Thompson that reads, "I stand with Graham Linehan. @Glinner")
This is Scott Thompson posting support for Graham Linehan, a comedy writer who has, in recent years, completely tarnished his reputation due to a disturbing hate campaign against transgender individuals and their rights, and earlier this month, he was arrested for posting hateful social media posts inciting violence towards trans women.
I have personally been a victim of harassment and defamation from Linehan, whom I even had to report to the police when his actions made me feel unsafe due to our living in the same city. I have also collaborated with other victims of his, such as actor David Paisley, who had to take Linehan to court for describing him as a "paedophile" for being an ally to the trans community.
I won't go into details on Linehan's extremely extensive track record of hateful actions because that information is widely known and readily available, and Scott Thompson is not responsible for Linehan's actions.
He is, however, responsible for his own.
The Hannibal fan community is incredibly diverse, as well as having a notably high population of queer people, and that includes a huge amount of transgender fans and trans-friendly allies. There have been several essays and even two versions of a book published on the themes of transition and change in Hannibal that appeal to the trans community. As such, I presently do not feel safe or welcome attending Red Dragon Con 8 as a marginalised person, knowing that one of the guests vocally supports hatred and discrimination towards my community, hatred that I have personally been a victim of. I am concerned for all of the trans attendees, many of whom are also younger than myself and more vulnerable, many of whom will be attending alone.
Unless Scott Thompson is willing to publish a public retraction and apology and make it clear that he is not a threat to the trans community, I do not believe that he should be welcome as a guest at Red Dragon Con 8. It pains me to say that, as Jimmy is one of my favourite characters in the show and I was so excited about him being a guest, I am incredibly saddened to be sending this email.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding this matter.
Kind regards,
Felix F Fern
