The Roe deer family (Doe & 2 fawns/kids) on the scrape at #RSPBLochwinnoch last week having fun. (Sorry for the shaky handheld camera work - don't think the Springwatch crew should worry!)

A front view of a female Shoveler duck sitting on the wet grass at RSPB Lochwinnoch in June 2025. She is looking off to her right which shows the typical long, broad, flat and dark bill of a Shoveler. She has mottled brown and fawn coloured plumage which is quite drab in comparison with the male.
A side view of a male Shoveler duck perching on the wet grass at RSPB Lochwinnoch in June 2025. He has tucked his bill and head partly under his wing hiding the extent of a Shoveler's bill but showing his small yellow and black eye. He has a blue or purple nape, a vivid rust coloured underside set off by brilliant white sides under vivid blue and black wings - much more colourful than the female.

A Sedge Warbler staring at the camera, while perched on a sloping grass stem. It has a dark crown with a lighter collared centre parting, broad white eye stripes above its eyes and dark stripes through its eyes. It has a cream coloured bib changing to whiteish underside, with its brown left wing just visible. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in June 2025.
A left side view of a recently fledged Pied Wagtail perched on a rock. It has a grey crown, bib, nape and back, changing to grey, white and black barred wings and lighter coloured underside. Its long dark tail is stretched out behind it and is edged in white. Its short grey bill is still showing the remains of its yellow gape. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in June 2025.

Head on shot of a Swallow banking to its left above the water at RSPB Lochwinnoch. Its wings are swept down giving some shape to the reflection in the water.
Left side view of a Swallow in flight with wings and forked tail swept back against the blurred green background of the reeds on the scrape at RSPB Lochwinnoch.

Front left side view of an adult Redshank wading in the shallow water at RSPB Lochwinnoch in June 2025. It is approaching some green reed shoots with its long, pointed red and black bill extended. Its head, neck, back and wing plumage is mottled brown and light brown, with its underside mottled dark brown and mainly white. Its whole body is reflected in the water although very little detail can be seen.

A Common blue Damselfly looking like it is doing a headstand on a small branch. The viewpoint shows off its blue and black banded body picked out against a background of green foliage. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.
Two Common blue Damselflies (both males) on a sawn off branch, which is lying horizontal and propped up against another branch, with the cut edge catching the sunlight. They are side on to the camera, looking to our left with their bodies parallel, one above and ahead of the other. Their blue and black banded bodies are picked out against the bark of the branch. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.
It's #InsectThursday and the Common blue Damselflies were out in force last time I was at #RSPBLochwinnoch - but this one was showing off!

A front shot of a Wren on a green mossy tree root in the undergrowth at RSPB Lochwinnoch in April 2025. In typical Wren pose its tail is cocked straight up, showing the brown and black barring clearly. It has turned its head to look up to our right.
A front shot of a Wren on a branch in the shadow at RSPB Lochwinnoch in April 2025. In typical Wren pose its tail is cocked straight up and it has turned its head to look up to our left, showing off its thin, sharp and slightly curved yellow and brown bill.

Photo shows side view of Redshank and Black-tailed Godwit together in the water on the scrape at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025. The Redshank is to the rear and facing to our left, and the Black-tailed Godwit is to the front and facing right. The Godwit is substantially bigger and more colourful (rusty red around the head and neck) than the Redshank and has a much longer bill.
For #WaderWednesday I thought this gave a useful comparison between one of the Redshanks and the Black-tailed Godwit I saw at #RSPBLochwinnoch recently.

This is a side view of a pair of Green-veined White butterflies mating on a branch of a tree. They are positioned back to back and one has reversed its body on top of the other’s and between its raised wings. Their wings are raised, showing clearly the thick green veins running through their otherwise white wings. Their antennae are also very clearly visible. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.

Jet black Jackdaw picked out against green grass and shrubs at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025. Bird’s bill is full of feathers, and perhaps flesh, taken from the carcass of a bird (possibly Lapwing) lying behind it.
It’s #ThursJay! Only noticed at home that this Jackdaw was feeding on/gathering nest material from a carcass of what might be a Lapwing

Black-Tailed Godwit paddling on the water at RSPB Lochwinnoch, with a small strip of island in the foreground. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.
A left profile image of a Black-Tailed Godwit about to take flight from the water at RSPB Lochwinnoch, with a small strip of island in the foreground. It has a long, straight, orange bill with a black tip, a white stripe through its dark eye, a rust mottled throat and neck, white underside and a dark back leading to its black tail. Its wings are up ready for flight and show brilliant white feathers underneath. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.
The Black-Tailed Godwit took off from the water and landed on the grassy scrape and walked to another patch of water. It has a long, straight, orange bill with a black tip, a white stripe through its dark eye, a rust mottled throat, and a dark back leading to its black tail. As it's walking out of the water its long, spindly legs are visible with one off the ground as it took a step. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.
A Redshank wading through the water at RSPB Lochwinnoch. It has a long, straight, orange and black bill, a dark eye and brown and fawn mottled head and back, with light coloured and white mottled breast and underside. The top of its bright red legs are just visible above the water surface. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.

A front view of a Sedge Warbler perched on a thin branch in bushes. It is looking up to our right with its very orange bill wide open, as it sang and called very loudly and incessantly. It has a dark crown, with a darker eye stripe above its eye, a white eye stripe immediately above its eye and a thin dark stripe through its eye. Its bib is white, turning to a light cream colour on its breast and underside. Taken at RSPB Lochwinnoch in May 2025.
The first Sedge Warbler of the year for me, yesterday at #RSPBLochwinnoch. It was certainly giving the Wrens a vocal run for their money!
