The attack in Lübeck stands for a long continuity of far-right violence in Germany. For lives taken because they were marked as not belonging. And for a failure of society and the state that has yet to be fully confronted.

Today, racist violence, hate and exclusion persist. At the same time, asylum and migration laws are being further tightened. Not to protect people, but at the expense of those who are already most at risk.

Racist violence is not prevented by exclusion or deterrence. Harsher asylum laws are not an answer to right-wing terror. Remembering means drawing consequences. For protection, equal rights and a society free from racist violence. ‌

Thirty years ago today, on January 18, 1996, ten people were murdered in a racist arson attack in Lübeck.

We remember the dead and commemorate the victims.
