...just two predators circling the same gold-leaf cage. We were the King and Queen..., the very picture of Low Country royalty. For the occasion, I chose a gown of ivory silk and chiffon that trailed behind me like the pale belly of a copperhead in the brush, looking for all the world like a fragile creature of the parlor when I was already as hard as a brick. In keeping with a long-standing law of my blood, a Beaumont family tradition that goes back to when the Indians still owned the red clay, I retained my maiden name. A woman does not give away her father's land or her own identity to a boy simply because he can sing a low note that makes the windowpanes rattle. Silas stood there looking like a wild hawk trapped in a dark wool suit, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alistair Thorne who had already gone to the salt dirt of Beaufort. He was an orphan of the coast, bringing nothing to the altar but that gold in his throat and the shadow in his hazel eyes that promised a storm.
