Pete LaCock once homered off of Bob Gibson, prompting Gibson to retire. Years later, in an old-timers game, Gibson intentionally pegged him the first time he faced him. Also…LaCock’s father (Peter Marshall) hosted Hollywood Squares!

Always fun to post a pic of Fergie! Especially as a #RandomCardFromMyCollection! Fantastic pitcher who is probably not in the conversation about “greats” as often as he should be!
You can be sure that @misstellier.bsky.social approves of today’s selection for a #RandomCardFromMyCollection! The Hawk always looked fierce, but never more so than in those beautiful Expos powder blues! A gorgeous card, in my opinion.
#RandomCardFromMyCollection features Bake McBride today! Not only did he have one of the great afros in the game, he also dated my third grade teacher at one point!
Sticking with 1980 Topps and the San Diego Padres for a 2nd straight #RandomCardFromMyCollection: Hall of Famer Dave Winfield was not only a 1st round draft pick of the Padres. He was also drafted by the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, the ABA’s Utah Stars, and the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings!
We’re going to continue with a few more 1980 Topps cards at #RandomCardFromMyCollection. A few days ago was Garry Templeton; today we’re doing Opening Day backflips over The Wizard, Ozzie Smith! Both played SS for SD & STL, both wore #1, and they even were traded for each other!
My mom took me to games as a kid, and we sat in the bleachers. Before one game, Silvio Martinez was in the outfield and my mom yelled, “Hey Silvio! Throw the kids a ball!” He did. My mom caught it, gave it to me, and I had a souvenir! So he’s today’s
#RandomCardFromMyCollection!
Some folks link Brock & Yaz together because of the 1967 World Series, four years before I was born. For me, they’re forever joined because they both reached the 3,000 Hit Club in 1979, a fact celebrated on 1980 Topps card #1, which is today’s #RandomCardFromMyCollection.
I’ve had this card since 1980. Judging by its condition, it was well-loved by 8-year old me. Even then, I thought 100 hits from each side of the plate was pretty cool! #JumpSteady celebrates his 69th birthday, so Garry Templeton is today’s #RandomCardFromMyCollection.
Since I got busy and didn’t post yesterday, here are a couple cards for today. Both are guys who I’m pretty sure just started out old, ended up ancient, struck out 3,000 batters, and picked up 300 wins along the way: Phil Niekro & Gaylord Perry. #RandomCardFromMyCollection
It’s a mini card, but a major dude! Fergie was not just a great pitcher, but is also a great guy, and that’s why I’m thrilled to honor him as today’s #RandomCardFromMyCollection!
The condition is far less than perfect, but what a cool card this is! Not only a sweet action shot of Tony Gwynn, but a bonus Hall of Famer thrown in with Ozzie Smith! That’s certainly enough to earn this card a spot as today’s #RandomCardFromMyCollection!
#RandomCardFromMyCollection honors the one and only Curt Flood. A great player whose impact off the field was even greater than his sizable impact on the field!
#RandomCardFromMyCollection brings you Bill “the Spaceman” Lee!
Since it’s the time of year for March Madness, let’s feature a really good college basketball player. Tony Gwynn set a school record with 590 assists on the hardwood for the San Diego State Aztecs!

#RandomCardFromMyCollection today is the great Will Clark, who finished off a fantastic career with a brief stop in St. Louis where he forever endeared himself to Cardinals fans, posting a 1.081 ops over 197 plate appearances down the stretch in 2000. Plus it’s his 61st birthday!
#RandomCardFromMyCollection honors Dale Murphy, who today celebrates his 69th birthday. What a stud! From 1982-85, he won both the Silver Slugger and the Gold Glove every year, playing 162 games each season, averaging 36 home runs, and
winning back-to-back MVP awards in 82 & 83.
#RandomCardFromMyCollection is going with a 1976 Topps Dodgers pitcher for the second straight day. This time it’s Hall of Famer Don Sutton, who won 324 games with a 3.26 career ERA. And he’s also among the all-time leaders in curls.
Youngsters may just know of him because of the surgery that bears his name, but Tommy John was a heck of a pitcher back in the day with 288 wins and a 3.34 ERA for his career.
#RandomCardFromMyCollection
The 1st decade I really followed baseball as a kid (1977-86), there were very few hitters more feared in all of baseball than Jim Rice. He was universally regarded as a stud. Today is the Hall of Famer’s 72nd birthday, and that’s why he is today’s #RandomCardFromMyCollection. 💪
On what would have been his 75th birthday, I remember the larger than life James Rodney Richard. When I was a youngster, few players captured my imagination quite like the Astros’ 6’8” flamethrower, whose career was tragically cut short by a stroke. #RandomCardFromMyCollection
If I planned these out ahead of time, I could have saved Monday’s post for today, celebrating “Pops” on what would’ve been his 85th birthday. Here’s Willie Stargell’s 1979 Topps card, from the year he led the world champion “We Are Family” Pirates!🏴☠️🏆
#RandomCardFromMyCollection
You don’t mess with a streak, and today is Kent Tekulve’s 78th birthday, so it only makes sense to have a fourth straight Pirate featured by #RandomCardFromMyCollection!
May as well stick with the Pirates for a third straight day. #RandomCardFromMyCollection brings you The Cobra, recently elected Hall of Famer Dave Parker! I met a longtime scout once at a high school game who told me Parker was the most talented prospect he’d ever scouted.
Let’s stick with the Pirates at #RandomCardFromMyCollection: 1976 Topps Willie Stargell looks great in that yellow hat, but I’d argue he looked even better with a black pillbox cap adorned with Stargell’s Stars! Enjoyed seeing his statue on our PNC visit.
#RandomCardFromMyCollection brings you 1971 Topps Bill Mazeroski. When my wife took me to PNC for my 51st birthday a few years ago, we were sure to go by the site of Mazeroski’s most memorable moment, Forbes Field. And just beyond the left field wall, there is a ball field named in his honor!
#RandomCardFromMyCollection presents 1968 Topps Denny McLain. Condition on the card is far from mint, but that was the year McLain likely became the last ever 30-game winner in MLB. He led the Tigers to the 1968 World Series where they (sadly) defeated my St. Louis Cardinals.
#RandomCardFromMyCollection brings you Bob Sykes. Lots of Cardinals fans (and Yankees fans) will know his significance! And it’s not just that the card included a cool in-game photo from Veterans Stadium.
Sticking with the 3D cards, transitioning from Tim Raines to Gary Carter to Dwight Gooden. It’s hard to overstate how big a deal he was in the mid-80s, and he’s definitely larger than life on today’s #RandomCardFromMyCollection!
Following up on yesterday’s #RandomCardFromMyCollection, another 1980s star with that beautiful Expos uniform popping out at you, Gary Carter!
