"The tension in the atmosphere rose with every passing second of dangerous silence. Two dominant adult males about to go head to head, each armed with the means of ending each other. No matter, on this Curtis wasn’t going to budge and the longer he held Gibson’s lazy eyes with his own, the more determined he was not to back down. It was Gibson who broke the spell by raising one hand between their faces, his middle finger extended, sending a message that didn’t break the silence, a taunting smirk on his face as if daring Curtis to have a go. Responding in kind, Curtis’ eyes never wavered, but he too raised his hand between them, the knife held point down, suspended from his fingertips. Seeing the uncertainty there, Curtis didn’t bother lessening the impact by smirking back, and theatrically moving his hand to and fro as if trying to find the right place in the air, using only his peripheral vision, he paused, raising one eybrow. The moment Reave’s attention was diverted by this slight movement, Curtis released his light hold on the handle and before he could move, the blade fell, finding its mark, slicing through the tip of Reave’s boot and lodging there as he tried to leap away, but finding such a thing impossible since his back was literally and figuratively to the wall. “ARE YOU MENTAL?” he screeched, pushing Curtis back and bending to pluck the knife out of the stout leather, knowing he’d avoided injury by millimetres. “You tried to stab me, you fucker!” “No, I was aiming for your boot. Got it, too,” Curtis met his furious gaze and he curled his lip in a tight smile. “Lucky you didn’t have a hard-on, right?” Stepping away, he turned his back on the fuming Gibson and peered into the refrigerator while Gibson spluttered away behind him. “Best you accept when you’re beaten and get on with whatever the hell it was you were doing before I caught you.” Now however, he was presented with the sticky situation of having Gibson furious at him for usurping his games.
