Too many women have their lives stolen from them because of violence.
2 to 3 women are killed every day in this country and behind that statistic there are daughters, sisters, mothers and friends, all with names, faces, families, and futures, now lost.

Women and Girls and/or survivors of gender-based violence are NOT political bargaining chips to be used to justify harm, bigotry or violence. It is time to take a stand with us and #ReclaimTheNight from all forms of violence.
Why is it still important? Despite it being over 40 years since the first march, women are still disproportionately affected by sexual violence. Too often, we are told to change our behaviour to avoid sexual violence. This narrative often feeds into a culture of victim-blaming.
Too often we are told: Don’t wear headphones Don’t go for a run in the dark Don’t wear revealing clothes Don’t drink or look drunk Don’t get in a taxi on your own Don’t go home with someone you’ve just met
But what if we said: Don’t assault someone wearing headphones Don’t follow someone that is going for a run in the dark Don’t shout sexual comments at someone because of their clothes Don’t take advantage of lone or drunk people Don’t rape the person you’ve gone home with
Why is it still so important for us to #ReclaimTheNight?
With the weaponisation of violence against women and girls to spread hate and target marginalised groups marches such as these are more important than ever.
25th November to 10th December sees 16 Days of Activism internationally against Gender-Based Violence.
Across Scotland, women will be coming together to raise awareness around violence against women.

What is Reclaim the Night?
The first Reclaim the Night march in the UK was in 1977 in Leeds. Inspired by similar marches in West Germany, the Leeds march was partly in response to the ‘Yorkshire Ripper’ murders and the police reaction, which was to tell women they should not go out at night unless absolutely necessary.
Clipping from Spare Rib Magazine 1977 from Glasgow Women's Library. Quote from newspaper in 1977 "The next Ripper victim could be anyone's wife, daughter or girlfriend" captioned: "Intimidated on the streets, in the home, by the papers.... Leeds women resist"
Who organised it? The women's liberation movement
